Cults have been an interest of mine. I've listened to podcasts that are geared towards true crime that have done research about the events. Very few that I've heard focused on the mentality and the loaded language and the thought terminating cliches that Amanda Montell sheds light on.

With cited sources and plenty of references that allow insight to the thoughts that celebrities, scientists, politicians, etc. subscribe to.

This book ultimately is more of a reminder that language is a powerful tool and it's within the best interest of everyone to pay closer attention to the way language is used today. Especially today.

As an English teacher, this was right up my alley. I have always wondered how people who were a part of a cult, mlm selling groups, peloton groups and others had remainder so loyal in their following. While no novel can have all the answers, this gave me some insightful insight on how the leaders we may or may not be familiar with today utilize language to get what they needed.  I love how Montell didn’t try to make this sound pretentious when it came to language as a whole. She made this relatable and easy to understand.

What a fascinating dive into the language of cults, both traditional (Jonestown, Heaven's Gate) and not (MLM schemes, SoulCycle). Montell uses her references in such a way that it reads like a long magazine article, and so if I have one complaint, it's that I often felt that she was just skimming the surface of all there is to discuss (the rise of QAnon could have filled a whole book!). All the same, my linguistics-loving brain dug it.
