While I enjoyed this new adventure with Tilly and Oskar through the fractured world of various fairy tales, I did not like this book as much as the first one.
Tilly's attitude really started to wear on me. She was so disrespectful to her Grandparents, who were just trying to keep her safe. She's been bookwandering for all of five minutes, yet she acts as though she knows everything there is to know about it. She repeatedly disobeyed their instructions only to find herself and her best friend in trouble...again.
The book ends with a lot of unfinished business. Sure, the Chalk situation is cleared up, but now the issues within the Underlibrary are getting more serious, and there's the possibility of the Archivists finally being found. This book was clearly a set-up for the next book, which makes it a little more slow-going and boring in places.
I think I would have enjoyed this more if there were less talk of Underlibrary rules and bureaucracy and more adventures being inside actual books.
As it is, I think I'm going to take a break from this series. I'm not a huge fan of Tilly, and I really don't care enough to see what the outcome of all this will be. I love the idea behind this series, but I'm not feeling the execution.

Ik hou van afwisseling. Ik had dit boek dan ook expres afgelopen week gehaald zodat ik het na Wuthering Heights kon lezen. Een zware ouderwetse klassieker afgewisseld met een luchtige middle grade. Ik heb het eerste deel al een behoorlijke tijd geleden gelezen, maar gelukkig heb ik een goed geheugen, dus al snel kwam het verhaal van het eerste deel terug.
En dat is maar goed ook, want het verhaal gaat meteen verder waar we gebleven zijn. Er wordt af en toe terugverwezen naar het eerste boek, maar er wordt geen info dump gedaan of korte samenvatting gegeven. Alleen datgene wat op dat moment nodig is wordt even terug- en bovengehaald. Al de rest niet meer. Ik ben daar zelf altijd erg blij mee en ik vind het des te leuker dat dit in een middle grade gedaan wordt.
Net als het vorige verhaal kent ook dit verhaal weer een basisavontuur dat een onderdeel is van het grotere geheel. Dit keer gaat het over sprookjes en wat heeft James ongelooflijk leuke dingen gedaan met de meest bekende verhalen ter wereld. Er lopen verschillende versies door elkaar en sommige karakters hebben ineens een hele eigen wil waardoor eigenlijk hun hele sprookje helemaal anders in elkaar zit dan de versie die wij kennen. Het is heerlijk om op deze manier de sprookjeswereld te ontdekken.
Maar ook een beetje gevaarlijk. De balans tussen verwondering en plezier en gevaar en actie is heel goed gedaan. Hoewel het verhaal bij vlagen echt wel spannend is, wordt het nooit te spannend en blijft er ook altijd een beetje humor inzitten. Daarnaast is het voor niemand moeilijk om helemaal in het verhaal te zitten. De personages zijn dusdanig geschreven dat iedereen wel iets van zichzelf in ze kan herkennen. En dat maakt het extra leuk.
Ik ben dan ook ongelooflijk benieuwd naar het volgende deel!

“There are no rules for reading, after all.”
This is a very cute and adventurous sequel, though I do think I enjoyed book 1 a bit more.
There was a distinct coziness in the first book that I didn't feel translated to this installment - not because of the heavier things happening, but because of the overall vibe. Not to mention Tilly being a wee bit on the insufferable side. I get it, I do... but this still felt a bit out of character.
Those things aside though, I did have a fun time with this. It's still such a unique, cozy series - perfect for the book-loving inner child or anyone looking for an escape.
