The adult main character is so terrible and has no redeemable qualities and I can’t do this for another half of the book.

Story of Pia, a girl who lost her mother To the Spanish flu, didn’t know if her father survived WWI, and had her brothers stolen from her.

Such a great but sad read. Some really hard parts to read but overall I kept reading. I wanted more at the end, I wanted to know more but loved that it was left open.

**3.5/5**

The flu came to Philadelphia in September of 1918. That is where The Orphan Collector by Ellen Marie Wiseman begins. Within this context of history is the personal story of Pia Lange, a thirteen-year-old German immigrant. In this very historical novel, the author also introduces an element of magical realism. Ultimately, the historical setting of this book is timely, and the story is an the emotional personal conflict between Pia and Bernice and all that they each represent.

Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. While the story primarily takes place during 1918 with the Spanish flu in it’s full furry it resonates with so much of the world today.
