Literally so boring omg
I tried so hard but I actually broke a 194 day reading streak because I couldn't get into this book

The first few pages were a slog to get through and I think a large part of that is due to both the split narrative and the long sentences that litter the first 50 or so pages. A lot of the beginning of this book is a steady introduction and set up to a few characters who will have a presence throughout the whole story but mainly Theo, Tilly and Keziah. And it was hard to sit and read on but I'm glad I kept going if only to see the great pages between everything else. Because then the story threw me for a loop and it soon picked up.

At first I only enjoyed the chapters from Keziah's perspective but the further we went I found myself rushing to know more of Theo and his point of view as well. I also love the fact that we spend the whole book not even knowing Theo was a dwarf because for the whole thing he spends all his time around the only people who wouldn't even care to notice his lack of height. The ending as a whole was a delight and the only reason this didn't get a higher rating was the beginning. Although I am curious why Keziah mentioned a love she had for two people. Was the second person Theo? Still unsure.

Started off a bit slow, but I did get into it fairly quickly. There were some minor issues with continuity / typos (for example, the twins are supposed to be Egyptian but have super pale skin? Okay), but the story moved along well and had a lot of intrigue. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of explicit romance, though the romance that was included wasn’t very well developed. Although I was interested in the overarching plot line and connections between characters, I was confused in a lot of places and wasn’t super emotionally invested by the end. A decent book, but not the most well-constructed in my opinion.

It is not a book I would have typically picked. However, the writing style, the intrigues, characters and plot were so well done that I “enjoyed” my reading more than expected. Caution though as the events described are quite crude so look out for the trigger warnings!!
