This book is the story of Theo, Tilly and Keziah. The book is written from two perspectives, that of Theo and that of Keziah. Theo lives with his grandfather who sees him as a burden, but a last reminder of his dead daughter. Lord Seabrook is a cruel and vindictive man, but soon finds his match in his new wife. This leads to Theo being forced to leave the house he was grown up in and find employment with Dr Summerwell in a Museum of Anatomy. Theo’s dream is to become a surgeon, an unsuitable job for a Lord at that time.

The second perspective shows us the difficult lives of twins - Tilly and Keziah - who suffer abuse, emotional and physical, at the hands of their alcoholic father. The girls are used by their father to peddle his wares and dupe people into buying his elixir.

I enjoyed the story and the atmosphere. Essie Fox was able to write a very atmospheric novel, with cruel, kind, and at times gullible characters. The writing is perfect for this dark, bewitching Victorian setting. I found the pace to be slow, but I think this is more a preference than a fault with the book.

I really loved the descriptions and the atmosphere in this book, as well as the characters.
