this reads like fanfic and is so ironically amazing and unironically iconic. it’s just so bad in a good way, it’s so unintentionally hilarious and such a fun easy read/listen

i honestly liked this book way more than i expected at all. edward just grew on me more and more and i progressively hated bella more and more and more. she’s dumb. i do love emmett and especially alice and esme. this book was good yet bad and i don’t know how to feel abt it.

Goodreads has this marked as my second reread, when in reality it is a number larger than I care to admit. It was in my pre-Goodreads life. As such, no review has ever been written for it and now I will rectify that.

Reading from an adult perspective over a teenager one has highlighted some of the issues for me. It’s a bit insta-love-y. The writing is actually not the greatest. Bella seems younger than 17.

Despite all that, it’s still a 5-star read. Nostalgia? Maybe. This book did a lot for me though. It’s a story that’s purely entertaining and opened my eyes to how interested I was in the genre of paranormal romances. It’s a part of me that will always live in me, regardless of how many years pass and how many critiques this book gets.

Despite the insta-love and despite how young Bella can sound sometimes, they are a cute couple that genuinely cares for one another. The book has great secondary characters.

All in all, regardless of what everyone thinks of this book, I will forever be rereading this book.

My husband got me the white box set for Christmas so naturally I’m due for a reread. I haven’t read these in at least a decade and I forgot how truly angsty Bella is as she falls in love with Edward. Her musings on her sudden preoccupation with his whereabouts, her blushing, the way she stammers around him, it reminds me of being 16 myself. I wish they’d included more of the Cullen’s family history in the movies or even other spin off books. I’d read a whole series about Carlisle taking over his father’s church and his transformation.

I never read this book growing up and I thought I would finally give it a try, considering all the things I've heard about it over the years. And I needed something to balance out my library checkout pile, though looking back on it, adding this book to my pile of books about serial killers probably didn't diversify my reading a whole lot. I will start off with the good. If I were still a young teen, I probably would have loved this book as much as my friends at the time did. Sometimes it's hard reading YA books as an adult because I am a different person now than I was as a teenager. I did get through this book rather quickly, once I got past the first few chapters and got used to the writing style (don't worry, I will take my turn at the writing momentarily).
Okay, this book is ridiculous. There are a number of reasons. First, the writing is just shy of horrible. Part of the reason it took me so long to get into the book was because I spotted a couple handfuls of mistakes within the first chapter. It's not so much the grammar, but more the sentence structure. This begs the question: is she trying to write it as if she herself were a high schooler, or is it not purposeful? I think that's a dangerous line to walk. Regardless, it was not pretty from the start. I think she used more of the passive voice than I did in high school.
Also, I suppose this goes without saying, but Bella and Edward's relationship is horribly toxic. It is not good. I was cringing for a good half of the book, if not the whole thing. I did get a kick out of some of the more ridiculous aspects pertaining to Stephanie's ideas about vampires, like the sparkling in sunlight. The family baseball game, which is my favorite part in the movie, held up in the book as well. It is ridiculous, but that's part of its enjoyment.
I think I can say I enjoyed this book, mostly because of how ridiculous it was. I had seen the movie before, but the book certainly held up to all the criticisms and things I had heard. I don't think, however, that I will be reading the rest of the series.

These books give me joy and they made me fall in love with reading ya/fantasy
So I don't care if the writing isn't as good as some other authors, I rate it high cause I will forever love Edward ❤️
