I think this is my longest review to date.
This is my Mom's all-time favorite series. I grew up on the movies before I could read the books for myself. Side note: we used to listen to the soundtrack to clean on Saturdays, repeated for hours. She is obsessed. (I love her for it)
20 years later and here I am giving her favorite book 5 stars. I loved every second of this book.
As a Christian, I don't read smut. *spoiler sentence* I really appreciate this series commitment to clean romance until the last book (I will be skipping wierd parts).
That said, one of my favorite all time tropes is vampires (Admittedly, I think its because of growing up on the Twilight movies).
Clean romance, Fluff, found family, vampires, superpowers
Yes, the book was better❤️
Ps. The audiobook narrator for Twilight is amazing! She put her all into it, especially all the sweet and action-packed parts~
Yes, I am immediately starting Midnight Sun! (Ik its the retelling not the sequel ssh😉🎉)

The Twilight series...
  • Is full of Mormon ideology and theology if you know what to look for (I'm exmo, left as a teenager, so I spotted a lot of Mormon influence) - just FYI.
  • Glorifies and romanticizes controlling behavior, toxic relationships, stalking, domestic abuse, physical abuse, and SA.
  • Depicts women as deprived of full personhood, intelligence, independence, and agency
  • Presents various pedophilia-esque relationships in a positive light
  • Diminishes the severe problems absent/wishy washy/not properly supportive parents (particularly fathers) cause in their children
  • Diminishes the impact of power imbalances on consent in relationships
  • Fully inappropriately and very inaccurately appropriates the culture, history, and beliefs of real people who are part of the Native American Quileute Tribe, which is a real tribe (something no white person, and especially a mormon white person, has any right to ever do; if you don't know anything about the history, look up the Mountain Meadows Massacre and Brigham Young's treatment of the Native Americans)

I rated this book 0.25 stars for these reasons, as well as the multitude of writing, character, and plot issues present. There are far better books out there with far better messaging and far better writing too. I would definitely pass up all of Meyer's writing, including "the Host," which is better overall in terms of the above issues but still has a lot of problems with it, particularly when it comes to consent.

I reread this for the first time as an adult, having only read it one other time as a 12 year old. It was fun rereading it as an adult, and doing it as a buddy read as well, but yikes this book is problematic. Red flags everywhere, Bella is so unlikable and annoying, and the writing can be so over-descriptive that it honestly takes you out of the story. As a reread/buddy read, it was enjoyable, but I think we can all agree that Twilight is definitely nothing to write home about.

“Twilight, again. Another ending. No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end.”

Perfect quote for the perfect book reading session I just did. Twilight again?!?!?!? The answer is yes. It’s been more than a decade since I last decided to read this book and I knew from memory that I’ve reread this book countless of times during my teenage years and loved it every time. This is why I added an additional tab for “cringe content” - for scenes and lines I sure loved during my teenage years but hate now that I’m an adult. infairness, there was only 5 tabs for that throughout the book so that means I haven’t cringed entirely on this book.

I can see why I loved it back then. I didn’t rate this below 3 so that means something, I still like it. It’s a good fantasy story for young adult, that’s for sure. Bella and Edward was the it book couple during the early 2000s and I can remember why. If it wasn’t for the sparkle during the sun thing, I doubt they’d get hate as much as it did now. I actually enjoyed it even when cringing occasionally.

Reason for rereading: I bought Midnight Sun last few months ago and I need to freshen up my memory on Twilight because the movie doesn’t do justice.

i forgot how cheesy this book is. i definitely enjoyed the nostalgic part of rereading this for the first time since middle school, and i will probably finish the rest of the series while i am at it. however, i also remember this being better from the last time i read it.

the romance aspect is exceptionally cheesy and pretty toxic.
2 teenagers falling in love with each other after 1 kiss and both of them being pined after by every girl and guy and school was very cringey and eye roll inducing. bella being creeped on by every guy under the sun was also ridiculous. shout out to alice for being the best character ever
