May Amelia is the only girl in her family and the only girl in her town along a fairly remote river in Oregon in the late 1800's. Everyone tells her she is not a proper lady, which is fine with her, because she doesn't want to be a proper lady. Life is rough with all those brothers and her parents and then her mean grandma telling her what to do. Finally her mother has a baby sister and things start looking up. And then the near breaking point of May Amelia.
I liked it. But wasn't totally moved by it. I recommend reading it. It is good YA period fiction.

This book reminded me of a more culturally sensitive Caddie Woodlawn, which is awesome because that was one of my very favorite books growing up. May Amelia lives in a small community of Finish immigrants in Washington State in 1900. She's got a lot of spunk and a lot of heart, running around their farm and the woods with her many brothers, but she's also starting to feel pressure to "act like a girl". With lots of detail about the Finish immigrants and Native American people of the time and area woven in seamlessly, this is a solid adventure story with a strong heroine.
The audio recording is just fine. I tend to prefer voiced recordings, which this is not, but it's still a solid reading. Emmy Rossum gives May Amelia a no-nonsense voice, which fits with May Amelia's character. Rossum's reading voice is high and clear, childlike without being annoyingly childish.

I didn't like this one as much as the Boston Jane books, but it was still good.

This earned an extra star because there were several passages I just wanted to write down. May Amelia is a character that will certainly stick with me. I read The Trouble With may Amelia first and now I want to go back and reread that too!
Here's one passage I loved: "It gets me thinking. Maybe they'd ship me to Finland if I got into some real trouble because I'm a Finn. That sure would be exciting. It's one way to travel the world."
