Delicious! If you like mythology, political intrigue, and god damn love triangles (rages at the sky), you will like this one. I do NOT like love triangles but I will put up with it for the thrill of not knowing what is real and true and who is good or not for the entire book. Can't wait to read the next one.
Re-read 2021: I actually think I liked this one more on the re-read! I'm finally getting to the second book, and realized there was no way I could jump into it almost a year later without a refresher on the mythology. Definitely a good choice because Chakraborty has built a massive mythology. I read in a review that she did significant research into the historical mythology of djinn and incorporated it into these books. I stand by my original review of "Delicious!" Political intrigue, very dark pasts, magic, bigotry, power, gorgeous settings, and an ending that makes you want to immediately dive into the next.

Absolutely stunning. Just the right balance of romance, high fantasy, and political intrigue for my tastes. I loved everything about it. The book follows Nahri, a young con artist who gets pulled into the dangerous world of the djinn after accidentally summoning an ancient warrior. It's fast-paced and I found all of the characters engaging. I love that Chakraborty delves into the moral ambiguity of all the characters here. Even the ones who seem like they'd be on the side of justice (like the religiously devout Ali, who annoys me most because he knows the injustices and is horrified by them and goes along with everything anyways) stray from doing what they know is right in defense of the honor and love of their family and ideology. Nahri is one of my favorite female protagonists I've read in years, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel.
Just as stellar on a reread.
