This was a sweet little story to read with my son while he nurses. The chapters felt like short stories in a cohesive collection, versus a straight story.
Stuart Little is endearing, adventurous and such fun! I look forward to reading this one again for years and years to come as part of my son’s childhood.

Mostly a cute kids book, with silly scenes, but the last few chapters were a little weird for kids book as they involved Stuart courting a two-inch girl/woman whose looks were highly emphasized. I skipped the last chapter in that storyline, but wish I had skipped that section altogether as it wasn't even that interesting or funny. There is racist language with regard to indigenous people (referred to as "Indians" and with stereotypes attached), which I felt was manageable by addressing it with my kids each time it came up. Finally, there are antiquated family/societal roles and other sexism, which is not surprising given the age of the book.

I truly respect this book as an American children's classic - which is why I chose it as a read-aloud for the 3rd & 4th grade library time this year. What White does well is spin a bunch of really fun, imaginative happenings about a somewhat endearing mouse (is he a mouse? or a miniature human with mouse features? Existential question for the masses ...). However, as far as plot goes, I've always been disappointed with the ending. I realize White gets somewhat philosophical and ends it with this kind of "going in the right direction" ideology - which may appeal to some adults. But for the most part, it leaves children with little resolution (esp. w/ regards to Margalo). It's my opinion - and I don't claim to be a literary expert. But I did think the plot was a bit loose with a lack of resolution. Structurally and also in strength of characters, I prefer Charlotte's Web - it is Stuart Little's superior in every regard.
