Another excellent entry in this dragons-in-history series. Termeraire and his captain Laurence have finally made it back from their journey across Asia and Europe, only to find the dragons of England laid low by a deadly virus!! Luckily our hero dragon appears to be immune, thanks to something he encountered in his travels. So he and Laurence are going to take the dragons of their formation down to Africa to see if they can replicate the cure. But little do they know what the African natives, both dragon and human, have in store for them...

This fourth book finds Laurence and Temeraire trying to find a cure for the cough that is afflicting the British dragons. Doing so forces them to return to Africa where they confront the fall out from the slave trade and African Dragons.

Good read. Much better than the third.

Books two and three were a tad slow, but this one was fast-paced, incredibly intelligent, and funny! It's my favorite of the series so far.

the ending in this one is still as much a kick to the gut as I remember it being

I love this series! This one ends a bit abruptly, but was still extremely well-written. I can't wait to find out what happens next. Luckily, I have the next audiobook ready to go.

Very good! And where the first book in the series was apolitical, this one really delved into moral and political issues in a thoughtful and moving way.

See my review of "A Victory of Eagles."

Ooo, even more questions of morality wrapped up in a tidy little (?) story about fighting a pandemic while other fights are happening (we're still in Napoleon's war). I love how effortlessly Novik makes her (human) characters grapple with questions that go against everything they've been socialized to believe -- and how the dragons are even more effortlessly good. Laurence is wonderful and I have a bit of a crush on him.
