It had some interesting developments but just so slow paced
Pierwszy raz od dawna zarwałem całą nockę, aby przeczytać książkę. Po prostu nie wiedziałem. w którym momencie miałbym ją odłożyć, ponieważ przez narracje Novik się płynie. Bardzo podobało mi się, że autorka nie zrobiła z niewolnictwa tylko paralleli do sytuacji smoków, ale postanowiła wejść w głębiej w antykolonializm. Tak więc jak zawsze. Kocham Laurenca, kocham Temeraira, kocham Novik.

Laurence posmakował bycia niewolnikiem. Nie może zamykać się już w swojej bezpiecznej bańce quasi-zaangażowania w abolicyjne wartości. Ponieważ pamięta liny siatki. I długą męczącą podróż bez nadziei na ratunek. Chociaż muszę przyznać, że nie podobało mi się pogodzenie z Riley'em na koniec. Mam wrażenie, że ich konflikt powinien się tylko pogłębić.
I'm very glad that I bought a copy of this at the same time I bought the first three books in the series. Because after I finished the third (Black Powder War) I really wasn't sure I wanted to keep going. I still loved the characters, but the third book was difficult for me to get through. But, since I had this on my to-read shelf, I eventually did pick it up again, just to see what I thought, and... I couldn't put it down! There's a compelling backdrop (a terrible disease, a race for a cure) as well as old favorite characters I'd missed in the last two books, and a fascinating new dragon-human society in Africa. Plus, lots of chewy ethical issues and some interesting divergences from real world history. Be warned, though, there is a serious cliff-hanger! But one that is, I think, necessary to lend strength and weight to the development of the overarching plot, and the changes in the perspective of the characters. I was, however, very very glad I had waited so long to read this, because it meant I could run out and buy the paperback of book 5 right away!

Der Großteil der Handlung spielt hier in Afrika, auf der Suche nach einem Heilmittel für eine Drachenkrankheit, die für jeden Drachen Englands das Todesurteil bedeuten könnte. Doch auch wenn ich bei ca. zwei Dritteln des Buches das Gefühl hatte, die Handlung sei vorbei, ist das Ende voller unerwarteter Wendungen und Spannung. Das hat es sehr leicht gemacht, den Großteil des Buches an einem Tag zu lesen.
Endlich bekommen wir auch mehr Inhalt mit den Drachen, die Temeraires erste Freunde waren, obwohl es mir mit der Zuordnung ihrer Reiter schwergefallen ist. Aber so wichtig wie die Drachen sind sie ja nicht, hehe.
Und schon komme ich noch einmal auf das Ende zu sprechen: bitter und notwendig und auf jeden Fall genug, mich direkt auf den Weg in die Bücherei zu bringen (okay, ich habe das Ende schon auf dem Weg gelesen - aber wenn nicht, wäre ich bestimmt direkt aufgesprungen um loszugehen!).

Na Naomi Novik Temeraire sorozata nem ilyen. De egyébként is, mi tartja vissza az embert, hogy az elejétől olvassa? Semmi, mert ez egy kiváló fantasy, sárkányos, keverve alternatív történelemmel. S immár a negyedik résznél tart, ami konkrétan fél nappal azután folytatódik, ahol az előző véget ért.
Laurence és Temeraire visszatérnek a Szigetországba, magukkal hozva a sikeresen verbuvált csapatnyi vad sárkányt, és a frissen kikelt a kis tűzokádó Kazilikot is, a neveletlen Iskierkat. Otthon azonban rossz hír fogadja őket: rajtuk kívül szinte az egész hadtest beteg. A sárkányok hónapok óta szenvednek valami gyógyíthatatlan nátha szerűben, amelyből sokan nem tudnak felépülni, így az újonnan érkezettekre marad a járőrözés és a partok védelme is. Még szerencse, hogy Napóleon éppen Lengyelország felé terjeszkedik. Nincs könnyű dolguk Temeraire-éknek, mert a vad sárkányok nem igazán bírják a kötöttségeket és Iskierka se túl fegyelmezett, meg türelmetlen és mindent szeretne, ha lehet azonnal. Amúgy ő szolgáltatja a humorforrást (“Hol lehet vagyont szerezni? És hogy néz ki?” beszélgetése majd az ezt követő vagyonosodási akciója fergeteges). Aztán kiderül, hogy Temeraire nem betegszik meg, holott ki van téve a fertőzésnek és Laurence meg az orvosok úgy gondolják, hogy a hosszú, Kínába vezető úton valamikor Fokvárosban olyasmit ehetett, ami immúnissá tette a vírussal szemben. Ezért aztán jó pár beteg sárkánnyal elindulnak Afrikába, hogy megtalálják a gyógyszert. Ott pedig a kísérletezés mellett régi törzsi titkokra derül fény és úgy kerül veszélybe az életük, ahogy nem is számítanak rá.
Ebben a kötetben ismét csak fontos szerepet kap a rabszolgaság kérdése, s megint újabb típusú sárkányokkal és hozzájuk kapcsolódó különleges szerepekkel ismerkedünk meg. Úgy tűnik, szinte minden földrészen másképp viszonyulnak az állatokhoz és bizony az európai szinte a legellenszenvesebb, ahol csupán állatoknak tartják őket, akik nem többek lovaknál: csak nagyobbak. S hiába próbálkoznak Laurence-ék meggyőzni az embereket, hogy a sárkányok okos, érző, értelmes lények, akik sokkal jobb bánásmódot érdemelnének, mint amit kapnak, nem nagyon sikerül. Holott még az is kiderül, hogy nem csak Temeraire az egyetlen, aki kiemelkedően intelligens a sárkány hadtestből, hiszen barátaival nekilátnak egy újfajta geometria kialakításához.
Novik úgy építi fel a történetét és a szereplőket, jellemfejlődésüket, hogy Laurence és sárkányának utolsó lépése nem meglepő, hanem pontosan, hogy személyiségükből fakad. Ha nem így lenne, s nem így tennének, nem is ők lennének. S az izgalmas befejezés, amely rengeteg kérdést nyitva hagy a következő részre még szívszorító is. Bőven lehet izgulni a következő kötet megjelenése előtt, hogy vajon mi fog történni főhőseinkkel. Úgyhogy ha nem lett volna az utolsó negyed, kevesebb csillagot is kapott volna a könyv, de így most várom a folytatást.

Although I enjoyed the second and third books in the Temeraire series, I thought that they weren't as good as the first novel, and this fourth book definitely rose back up to the level of "His Majesty's Dragon." When the dragons in England are stricken with a lethal illness, Laurence and Temeraire travel to Africa to search for a mushroom that may be the cure. Although I admit to knowing little about the locations the captain and dragon have traveled to throughout the series, this locale seemed the best researched of them (and in the acknowledgements, it seems that Novik actually visited Botswana to talk to people there, so that may be why), and it includes some interesting perspectives on the English and their customs of the time, particularly the slave trade. Also, unlike the second and third books, the ending of this book, once again a set-up for the next in the series, did not feel like a wholly new plot; it is a logical continuation of the novel's overall story and not only opens the story for the next installment but reinforces Laurence and Temeraire's loyalty to each other.
Like the last couple of books, it feels like two totally different stories were put into one book and it's a bit disjointed. I really love the overall story and the characters, though, and there were some original elements here with the African setting. I just have a sort of irrational wish that she would have slowed down and put all her Temeraire stories into one or two books, condensing and streamlining them a little, instead of spacing them out (but apparently rushing through the writing) and letting them wander.
After so much war campaigns in the 3rd book we go back to some exploring and traveling about the world. Of course this time with a very clear goal and ticking clock. This one deals with plagues and African dragon customs so what is not to love?
Seeing another new type of dragon culture in Africa was all I could have hoped. Descriptions of the way of life and methods of building were, as always, most of the fun. Since I have been to Capetown, and Victoria Falls there was a special bit of magic for me in seeing it through a new lens.
I still love Laurence though he is a bit of a stick in the mud and so so very British. Temeraire is a naive but clever delight as always. The new and old characters were all welcome as old friends and the world was just as fun as always to live in.
That ending though.

Plot summary: Temeraire and Captain Laurence have returned from Turkey and Prussia with the flock of ferals and a shiny new baby dragon in harness. However, upon their return, they find England practically undefended against Napoleon - all of England's dragons are sick, and a number have died of the disease. When it becomes apparent that Temeraire is immune to the disease after being treated for a mild cold in Cape Town (en route to China in Throne of Jade), they return to Africa in search of a cure.
Thoughts: For the first time since His Majesty's Dragon, I found the story completely absorbing. The return of Lily and Maximus and their captains to the story made a welcome change, along with the return of Jane Roland - her no-nonsense attitude is fantastic. And I absolutely loved the section in Africa. Between dealing with issues about slavery, searching for a cure for the dragons, and uncovering Africa's mysterious interior, it was fun from start to finish. The ending has set things up very nicely for the next book in the series, which I'll be moving onto shortly!
