I have no obvious right to relate to this book. Yet, its about writing; and one's relationship with one's father, and how understanding that evolves over time; and one's relationship with one's mother and siblings; and one's relationship with one's lovers, and how these are all connected; and race, and coming of age in DC at a particular moment in history. Its a rich and soulful read.

Also, intentional or not, it puts in historical perspective recent work by Ta-Nehisi Coates, 'Between the World and Me'. Fathering Words being written largely from a son's perspective; Between the World and Me from the perspective of a father.
