I enjoyed the majority of the book, despite feeling immensely frustrated with some of the characters.
The ending was such a let down though. It was so abrupt that I thought the audio book had just cut out.
The rating would have been higher if there was an actual ending. But it made it feel like the author got sick of writing and just stopped.

Trigger warnings: child abuse, neglect, violence, foster care, infertility, gore, animal abuse, post traumatic stress. If you can handle 350 pages of these recurring themes, I would add this to your TBR. Though this was disturbing most of the time, it was insightful in a lot of ways and brought awareness to reactive attachment disorder and the ins and outs of social work for these situations. Definitely eye opening! The ending had a twist I wasn’t expecting, however the conclusion was underwhelming compared to the rest of the book.

Lucinda Berry’s The Perfect Child had my anxiety at 100% and my jaw dropping every other chapter. Creepy kid stories always get me, but Janie? She’s straight-up nightmare fuel in pigtails.
As a parent, I related to the desperate hope of wanting to “save” a broken child—but also the painful truth that some parents are just willfully blind. Berry nails that manipulative, gaslighting vibe a little too well.
And Christopher? Sir, your ego is showing. This wasn’t selfless devotion, it was denial on steroids while everyone else went down in flames.
Everyone seems to complain about the ending, and I will admit it is a bit abrupt but that being said, I think it left you with a gut punch that will stay with you longer. It has me.
I devoured this book and immediately grabbed the sequel novella (both on KU). If you like twisted family drama and psychological tension that’ll have you yelling at the pages, this one’s for you.
