Such a different perspective. I was on edge the whole time.

I enjoyed this book. It was interesting seeing the world through Jack’s eyes, especially as he experienced Outside for the first time. Also, it’s crazy (that might not be the best word) to think that this kind of thing actually happens and this wasn’t totally a work of fiction.

Like I said, I enjoyed the book. However, due to Jack being the narrator, there were parts that were hard to follow due to grammar issues, as well as Jack not fully understanding what was happening around him. I deducted one star for that reason.

This was incredible, and yet so sad. Told from the perspective of a little boy, really shows how this type of harsh environment becomes unconsciously integrated into a young child's psychology, but how quickly they can change with the right support. Loved it!

After I became more acclimated to Jack's language, I enjoyed the story more. There were many times that the novel saddened me based on Jack's lack of knowledge. However, I also enjoyed reading about his new experiences with each encounter and interaction in Outside. I am undecided if I will watch the movie.

definitely interesting and important read, i see how it became a phenomenon—maybe an instant modern classic?—in 2010. i knew the general plot and never saw the movie, it was a surprise to find it was written entirely from a 5-year-old's pov, it can't be easy to write that.
it starts off quite slowly as the suspense only builds up toward their escape in the middle of the book and then drops off almost completely. what it really is, is a story of a young woman and her young child finding a place in the world where they are safe and loved and free.

A thought provoking book on emotional levels. I found myself wondering about how I would handle the situation if I were Jack, Ma or Ma's parents. This book engaged me and while I had a few issues with the writing style, being engaged means the author succeeded.

First I fell in love with the movie, then I fell in love with the book. The book version is written from the perspective of the child, which makes it that much more special. A beautiful, heartwrenching story with well-thought-out characters. Highly recommend it.
