The characters were very thinly drawn, and the forces keeping them apart were overly contrived.

Spice levels off the charts. LORD.
**some spoilers of plotline ahead**
I loved that there was a nonbinary main character where the focus wasn’t on them being nonbinary. They have stories just like the rest of us, and they don’t need to revolve around trauma. That said, I thought it was a solid read and plotline. As much as I love spicy books, it might’ve been a touch over done in my opinion. I would have liked to see more of their emotional connection build up on the trip instead of literally just sex the entire time. I thought the sudden flip from relationship to breakup because of the job thing was also a little unrealistic? It just seemed like ok she’s a reasonable person, is this realllly how she’d react? I did like their growth after the trip and appreciated the ending though! Not my fav by Meryl Wilsner, but overall good!

Wilsner's sex scenes are getting hotter and more adventurous with every book, but I think their hooks have still never been better than they were with Mistakes Were Made. This is hot, funny, but emotionally not their most striking work -- a lot of the conflict between the leads could have been resolved with a simple conversation, though I appreciate that Wilsner at least acknowledged both that fact and why they weren't having that conversation.
I love that this one has a butch, enby protagonist -- almost unheard of in sapphic romance! -- but at times this read like Wilsner was trying to mimic Emily Henry's tendency to include mental health struggles and the need for self-improvement, which even Henry often struggles to make gripping.

The book starts with a very memorable line, and off we go on a funny, cute, spicy adventure with BFFs Ginny (non-binary, they/them) and Elsie (pan, she/her), as they go enjoy the non-refundable honeymoon that Elsie’s (now) ex-fiancé had booked. One thing that struck me almost immediately is that the story is told in the present tense - it gives it immediacy but also fly-on-the-wall vibes as we watch everything unfold. 👀 I also enjoyed watching Ginny push Elsie to ask for what she wants, when she wants. There’s also plenty of introspection on a number of topics, including on who you as an individual, outside of a friendship that’s somewhat co-dependent and has lasted for so long 🤔 Yes it’s a fun beach read, but there’s also plenty of depth 🏖️
