This would have been a four star, but it lost points for the perpetual anti-sex worker jokes and the heroine blaming an abused woman for her death. The pacing is all over the place, largely because the unnecessary manufactured conflict that draws out the story and left me bored.

It also suffers from the Not Like Other Girl in disguise. Where all but one of the other women in the story are antagonistic (jealous) or one dimensional background characters. The one other female character (friend, sister, mother, etc) is only slightly more developed but primarily exists as a confidant and cheerleader for the leading lady. That way it’s less obvious about the internalized misogyny, but it is definitely there.

The bright spots of this book are the banter between the two leads during the sexy wake up calls and their love scenes. They have great chemistry and are a fun twist on the grumpy/sunshine dynamic, where her sunshine is snarky but only with him. Which he likes a lot. Sadly, the romantic side of the developing relationship fizzles into a cliche “she fixes him by teaching him to feel” trope that left me bored.

I feel like the biggest letdown of this work, aside from the issues I’ve already mentioned, is that the author failed to explore the MMC’s very obvious degradation kink that makes the sexy scenes so electric. It’s as if she understood it worked, but either didn’t know or was reluctant to explore why. Which is a real shame, but not all that surprising given the rather vanilla branding of the series.

Oh well. I recommend it only for the sex scenes and the audiobook narration. Neva Nevarre and Jason Clarke gave great performances.

You know how you'll order something mild and then bam it's spicy AF? I didn't know much going on, ai just saw that someone I followed said it was smart and funny and it definitely made me giggle, wide eyed, and damn - this book was dang hot!

I'm not sure if I'm quite at that level yet to read regularly but it was addicting. I think the banter was fantastic and overall was great. Some of the sexy time scenes felt a little random, like the "what are you wearing scene." Overall I'm teetering between 4 and 5 stars but due to the fact that I couldn't stop listening, I'll say a 5!

I can forgive bad writing if the plot is good.
I can forgive bad plotting and characters if the writing is good.
I cannot forgive both.
All the wrong plot turns. The book was too short and useless at the end. The whole trope of calling your boss is gooooood, it should’ve stayed with that longer than 0.3 seconds. He should’ve found out and kept up the pretense to build tension etc.
So much potential for “hot” office scenes and him pretending like he doesn’t know.
Suuuuuuuuuuuch a missed opportunity.

But alas. Insta love and the word “hot” came out of the supposedly different characters so many times I literally had to take a breather from the cringe.
Who even uses cringe??? But this book… so many scenes…. Cringe.
Wish I hadn’t wasted the time to read it.
AND ON VALENTINES?
Unforgivable.

Who doesn’t love an enemies to lovers trope?! Not only enemies to lovers, but opposite’s attract. She’s sunshine, he’s rain, and I’m here for it all.

Some parts I felt were too quick, escalated too fast, which made it unrealistic, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t entertained and giddy during the book.

Also, the book is free on the Nook, so that’s definitely an added bonus!
