Really wish Flo had more character development, it was a bit frustrating to see the lack of her growth compared Kyo's story. Ending for Flo's part was meh and could've been better, wanted to see more of Kyo's story too

Hard to describe this book in any other word but beautiful. I enjoyed both storys of this book-within-a-book- a form I may seek out more often. The ‘Go’ motif was one of my favourite aspects, that and the translations. I guess Onomichi is another place I’ll one day have to visit in Japan.

It was a nice book I would say - it is an interesting concept having the perspective of the translator and then getting to read the book they’re translating. I liked the passion for art that the protagonist has, the cats (as per this writer) and the descriptors of Hiroshima prefecture. However, I did find it lacking in the emotional complexity of the characters. They are grappling with some very difficult trauma and it doesn’t seem like they ever address the root cause of the problem. They sort of shake their heads and it goes away. So yes, there is character development, but it feels very linear.  Additionally, the translator character mostly mopes in her sections - I do not ever feel like I’m in a story with her or that she is growing.
