DNF at page 150
I really tried with this one. I liked the author's first book, and had high hopes for this one. It is set in Japan, has a book within the book, features a cat, and is very character driven. But the problem was that I didn't care for any of the characters. Flo treated her girlfriend poorly and is then lonely and obsesses over her next translation work. She also treats her friends poorly and is quite a dull character. Ayako, one of the main characters within the book that Flo is translating, is a horrible old woman who treats her grandson, Kyo, like rubbish. I didn't care for her at all. And Kyo is just another dull character that doesn't exactly jump from the page. The plot is non-existent. The writing is okay, but feels quite simple and unengaging. I struggled through 150 pages and then had to give up, which I'm gutted about. The book is beautiful; the dust jacket, and the interior features illustrations dotted throughout. It really is a lovely looking book, but I just don't care about finishing it.

I really liked the writing style but it took a while for me to get into the story and I dont think its too memorable for me. If you want to get into Japanese fiction I think this could be a good place to start tho, I just didnt vibe with it as much as I wanted to
