This was an interesting read on several levels. The story is good. The nuances are good, the chance to glimpse into another culture. It had humor, pathos, a bit of everything.

The rooster coop was an interesting analogy but otherwise this was eh

Also never want to read the the phrase “dip my beak” ever again

loved the voice of the main character. The India he portrays is just as bleak and depressing as in other books I have read about India (A Fine Balance, for ex) but his humor made it easier reading.

I know the protagonist is one hell of a critic, he'll pierce your heart which is full of patriotism. I know he criticized India so much but isn't all that true? The real India? The facts we all ignore because we are not from darkness, because we are not balram, we are not stuck in the rooster coop.

Despite all the negative reviews, I loved reading it.

Fun to read Booker prize winner, dark humor about today's India.
