I read this book after Accidentally Engaged, and it was pretty obvious to me that this was an earlier book. I thought that the plot as a whole didn't hold up quite as well as Heron's second book—the barbershop quartet storyline didn't work that well for me. I also didn't think the enemies-to-lovers arc worked that well; there was nothing specific that was making Amira and Duncan dislike each other, and therefore the animosity felt unnecessary. As the book progressed, though, I liked it more and more, and I loved the way Farah Heron tackled bigotry coming from people the main characters love.

I’m not a fan of enemies-to-lovers, and this book doesn’t change that. This book especially was two different books - the first half made me pissed about Duncan ditching Amira and her little sister at the library. And that very evening, Amira thinks, “she couldn’t deny that he was loyal and supportive....” What? She’d spent maybe four hours in his presence, how would she know that? Duncan is alternately averagely nice and a total jerk. I had yet to see his appeal as a romantic character. 40% through and I was getting tired of Duncan being rude and then calling Amira our for being rude back, like he’s a completely innocent victim.

The second half of the book was completely different - Amira and Duncan were kind and they cared about each other. If one of them said something wrong, they apologized. The second half made me like this book, but the first was just frustrating. Although it had heavy topics, there was a lot of hope and support, and I didn’t think the book was too heavy, though it might be triggering for some.

I read the second book in this series first, and I loved it. The second book in a series is usually much better than the first, and so far this is no exception. I definitely recommend continuing the series. This was a closed door romance, but sexual content was started and strongly hinted at.
