In some ways this seems like two books: the story of a civil rights and union family in San Francisco and then a growing up in tight knit, drug fueled Boliinas. The clarity and determination of Wilson's activist family is destroyed by her father's assassination. He was a white union leader who fought against corruption and for integration. His uncovering of corruption creates enemies, and his civil rights works creates many friends and allies. However, following his murder when the family finds refuge in leftist communities in Mexico and LA, they tragically cannot seem to find the healing they'd need to survive. Winding up in Bolinas, just North of the City, the family has lost its center. This is a remarkable slice of San Francisco's labor history and the tragic personal results of political violence.
