I loved this book because who doesn't like a book about first love finding each other again. Axel is an Alpha male who was madly in love with Izzy. He left to join the military having to leave her behind. Extenuating circumstances put obstacles in Izzy's way where she ends up moving. She ends up marrying an abusive controlling man who beats her. She finally leaves him with the help of her best friend and starts over where her ex husband cant find her. She ends up meeting back up with Axel who thinks she just left and married another man. By the end of the book you are loving this big Alpha man who loves Izzy with everything he has. I love Harper Sloan and the way she develops her characters. She puts them in situations that you can relate to. I love her books and recommend that everyone goes out and one clicks now.
Absolutely loved this. PB on my PB purchase list. Definite re-read. Cannot wait for the other characters and their stories.
For me, the beginning was very slow going. The way the author handled the passage of time and flashbacks was very jarring. There weren't any smooth. transitions. There were a couple of plot twists that could have been handled better. All that aside, what saved it for me was the characters. I found the secondary characters very appealing and wanted to delve more into their backgrounds. I'm very hopeful that the successive stories will be better now that the groundwork has been laid.
This book was not for me. Nope. The heroine did my head in.
I started this series with Cooper, which is # 5 I think - I liked that one a lot, so I figured I would start from the beginning of the series. I wasn't disappointed. I had my moments of eye rolling, but that has more to do with my inability to find my romance bone than it does the writing. I really enjoyed Axel as an alpha - although I did feel it took too long for him and Izzy to get to the root of the issue. The moment I saw him, I would have demanded he tell me how he was alive, and how the f*** could he abandon me. Also, I'm not sure why she thought his foster mother who hated her, would have passed along his or her messages. She didn't have one single friend in town she could have trusted with their correspondence??? I also disagreed with how hard it was to find her abusive ex husband. He was not a super sleuth or in secret ops. He was a pampered boy who stole a lot of money, so how the fuck was there no paper trail? And why wasn't this bitch carrying weapons once she realized this specialized security force couldn't find him? BUT, I did love that she got away from him. I loved that she stood up to him in the end too. I'm also glad this had a happy ending. I will continue along with this series...mostly cuz I want to get at Maddox...I like the strong silent type. LOL
Whoops, forgot to change this to finished! I absolutely loved this book to pieces! I accidentally read Unexpected Fate which is the spin off to this series last year. I had no idea they were connected until it was too late. I'm excited to finish this series - I'm in love with this tight knit family!
Emotional roller coaster...
I felt so many things while reading this book... Harper Sloan really knows how to convey emotions and how to make you as the reader feel towards everyone of the great characters, if it's hate because of a situation or tears because of the sweetest gesture... You will feel it!!

An ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Calling all Kristen Ashley fans - you are going to LOVE Axel and all the other seriously swoon-worthy, bad ass alpha males in this book! This was a fantastic debut, and I am looking forward to reading the next one!
Axel is the perfect bossy, protective, sexy guy. For years he's thought THE love of his life just up and left him without a word and he's been holding onto the anger and pain of losing her. Rising up from the shitty cards he was dealt growing up - he made something of himself and is running a successful security business. But Izzy is never far from his mind.
Izzy was completely and totally in love with Axel. After he goes off to boot camp, tragedy strikes her more than once and her life is sent into a tale spin. She lives through an abusive marriage and manages to survive and then begins to pick up the pieces of her life again. As she's finally feeling safe and some happiness - her abusive ex strikes again and her best friends decide to call in reinforcements - and one of them just happens to be Axel - the love she thought she lost so many years before.
I will admit that Izzy's breakdowns did get frustrating for me at times. It was her insistence on NOT telling Axel the truth about their crossed wires all these years that about drove me insane. And I have to say - it's a great way to build suspense and keep you turning the pages. I just wanted to get to the point when these two finally saw eye-to-eye and realized they still had it BAD for each other.
The beautiful thing about this book was the sweet and incredible love these two shared. It was such a strong bond when they were just kids, and they could feel that love and attraction again after so many years. I truly felt it and believed in their love.
"Not one day went by Izzy that my heart didn't belong to you. To this day there has only been one woman that has and will ever hold it. F***, baby but the love I have for you is so f****** strong sometimes, I wonder if it will crush me."
Not to mention how HOT they were together. If my Kindle could catch fire - it would have.
I love a bossy, protective man and Axel did not disappoint. This book has a slew of fantastic bossy men and I'm thrilled to read their stories in the future.
A really good, steamy romance with some suspense and action to keep you on the edge of your seat! Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this one - can't wait for Greg's story next!

This was my first ever Harper Sloan book...and I am completely blown away. The writing was flawless, the story just flowed so smoothly. From the very first page I was hooked.
This story...gosh, this story was heartbreaking but also healing and full of hope and love. Though Izzy and Axel had a rough past after parting ways, their love never went away. I didn't matter what stood in their way in the years they were apart, that true connection that had never dissipated.
I truly loved Izzy. Even with the horrible things she had to deal with in life she is an extremely strong and brave woman. A woman should NEVER have to deal with the things she did, but that being said she was so strong.
Axel, damn this man is something special. Even after all of the years apart from Izzy, at first not being able to find her and then seeing she was married so someone else. Even with the pent up anger, his love always trumped that.
Though their wires were jumbled, in reality neither ever stopped searching and loving the other.
To see their connection flourish in the face of so much danger and heartache was truly and site.
And I absolutely LOVED every single "family" member of theirs. Dee and Greg ❤️ as well as the others.
From beginning to end I was hooked! A gigantic 5 stars!

Loved the starting couple for this series! Right out the gate you felt for Izzy and could understand her fight. Once Axel is introduced I loved him. So far with the little bits and pieces of the secondary characters in the series I can't wait to see where everyone lands. Fabulous opening series book!!!
