Ædnan is a beautifully told multi-generational story that traces the experiences of two Sámi families from the early twentieth century into the twenty-first. It's a novel in verse told by many different voices (although those of three women Ristin, Lise, and Sandra felt central), and flows backwards and forwards in time. It works as beautifully in English as I've been told it did in its original Swedish, testament to the excellent translation. That it wasn't so much as nominated for the International Booker blows my mind. The language is sparse and understated but still emotionally resonant and impactful. The layout on the page is also sparse, mirroring perhaps the silencing of Sámi culture and the sparsely populated land north of the Arctic Circle. All the white on the page certainly reminded me of snow. The novel covers many of the challenges faced by the Sámi people - the enforcement of newly drawn international borders preventing their reindeer herds from following traditional migration routes, the damming of rivers and subsequent flooding of grazing land forcing many to give up their reindeer herds in favour of jobs with the power company, pressure to attend Nomad Residential School and the subsequent loss for language and culture, degrading racist "medical" exams - as well as more recent cultural revivals and legal victories against the Swedish government for recognition of Sámi rights. The novel also explores individual experiences, and I particularly enjoyed the sections focussing on Ristin, her husband, and their twin boys. The ableism may have been hard to read but is undoubtedly reflective of the time. The natural environment is depicted in a way that is rich and loving. It felt like a much loved family member, which is fitting since the title Ædnan can be translated as both the land and my mother. Can't recommend this exquisite novel highly enough.

The poetry flowed so well, I often got lost in the story and once almost missed my metro stop. The pain of losing traditional and family knowledge, the trauma and danger of assimilation, was so clearly but beautifully shown. I wish I had kept a list or family tree as I read because some of the jumps between characters and time became confusing, but I look forward to a doing that on a re-read in the future.

Tämä teos herätti heti mielenkiintoni, kun siitä kuulin. Ruotsalaisen saamelaiskirjailijan runomuotoinen eepos Ruotsin saamelaisten vaiheista, kirjoitettu August-palkinnon tasoisesti? Kyllä kiitos! Kun kirjan kirjastosta sain, ensimmäinen reaktio oli sitten säikähdys; tämähän on hurja tiiliskivi!
Vaan ei syytä huoleen. Teos on paljon pelottavaa ulkoasuaan kevyempää luettavaa. Huikean käännösurotyön tehnyt Kieletär Inarin Kaija Anttonen epäilee esipuheessaan, onko onnistunut tavoittamaan Linnea Axelssonin alkuperäisteoksen ruotsin lyhyisiin sanoihin perustuvaa kepeyttä, mutta höpsis, sanon minä: Ædnan soljuu kyllä suomeksikin erittäin sujuvasti. Taitto on hyvin väljä, joten sivua saa olla kääntämässä yhtenään.
Melkoisen tarinan Axelsson runoillaan kertoo. Tapahtumat alkavat Lapista 1920-luvulta, jossa saamelaisperhe elää perinteistä paimentolaiselämää, vaeltaen porojen perässä laitumelta toiselle, maiden rajoista välittämättä. Sitten tulevat ruotsalaiset viranomaiset ja sanovat, että te olette muuten ruotsalaisia nyt ja teidän alueenne on tässä. Ihan sama, jos porotokat haluavat vaeltaa perinteisille laitumilleen; ne ovat muiden maita nyt.
Ruotsalaiset tuovat Lappiin kaikenlaista muutakin. Kallonmittaajia ja kansatieteilijöitä julistamaan saamelaiset alemmaksi roduksi. Kaivosyhtiöitä louhoksineen ja Vattenfallin patoamaan joet vesivoiman vuoksi. Koulut, joihin saamelaislapset viedään ruotsalaistettavaksi, joissa heistä nyhdetään saamen kieli irti.
Tarina jatkuu myöhempiin sukupolviin ja toisiin sukuihin aina 2000-luvulle asti. Uudet polvet saavat oikeuksia takaisin ja yrittävät saada yhteyttä kansalliseen perintöönsä, saamenpukuihin, kieleen, joikaamiseen. Mutta siinäkin on epäreilut piirteensä, kun Ruotsin hallitus päättää mielivaltaisesti ketkä ovat saamelaisia ja ketkä eivät. Paliskunnat käyvät oikeutta maankäyttöasioista Ruotsin valtiota vastaan.
Mikä tapahtui Ruotsissa, tapahtui tietysti myös Suomessa. Mikään tässä kirjassa esitetty ei ole ruotsalaisten yksinoikeutta. Yhtä lailla Suomi kolonialisoi Lappia. Marinin hallituksen on toivottu saattavan saamelaiskäräjiin liittyvää lainsäädäntöä kuntoon, mutta keskusta on jarruttanut asiaa, eikä se näytä tällä vaalikaudella etenevän. Väsytystaistelu valitettavasti toimii: monet saamelaisaktiivit ovat lopen uupuneita asiaan.
Axelssonin tyylilajina on siis runous. Kyse ei ole säeromaanista, vaan pitkästä runoelmasta. Säkeet ovat lyhyitä ja pelkistettyjä, mutta niin vain niistä rakentuu hieno kokonaisuus. Lukeminen vaatii hivenen tarkkaavaisuutta, kerronta hyppii ajasta ja näkökulmahenkilöstä toiseen, mutta onneksi aika ja näkökulma kerrotaan selvästi. Joku sukupuu henkilöiden suhteesta toisiinsa olisi ollut hyödyllinen.
En usko, että Ædnania kovin monille kielille käännetään. Anttosellekin teos oli monen vuoden urakka. Onneksi on apurahoja myöntäviä tahoja, joiden tuella tällaistakin voidaan suomentaa, koska puhtaan kaupallisin ehdoin tämän kirjan suomentamisessa ei varmasti olisi ollut mieltä. Kiitos siis apurahoittajillekin, tämä kirja on todellinen kulttuuriteko.
