It was a good read, predictable to a large extent, but I liked the fact that the Ryiah wasn't the most powerful student at the Academy. The non-heir's character is also rather interesting...mostly because of his ambiguity. However, Ry's relationship with Darren and the whole deal with Priscilla was a little too predictable for my liking.
SpoilerElla and Alex though, are a cute pairing.

Entertaining, well-written.
Made me laugh sometimes ("You can scream obscenities at me after")
Not entirely cliché-avoiding, but made a good effort.
Not love-centered (yeeey).
A light, fast paced read, not that much surprising, but with some stand-outs.
Like our main character, who for once is not there by sheer luck and suddenly becomes super skill-full in no time. She literally spends a year with lack of sleep to step up to his mates for the chance to get one of those 5 spots. She trully doesn't know what she's doing, only keeps trying, keeps studying, keeps fighting.
For some reason now I finished and looked back at the cover I remembered she is ginger, which is something that even if it was said multiple times, just didn't stick, dkw. I think some more world-building was lacking. We were thrown into the story in a very fast way (literally the first page), and we lacked tons of background. But it still was very enjoyable.

Reminiscent of Throne of Glass and A Kingdom of Exiles with the whole training school to become an elite warrior set up—not as intricate as the former, but still engaging. Read it in one sitting.

This was a pretty good book. I enjoyed the characters, the plot, and the overall conflict within the story. I’ll definitely read the rest of this series. 3 stars only because I was bored often, but that happens a lot with first books in a series.
