Literally the whole book is internal thoughts with very little action. Super boring which is kinda a bummer since it’s supposed to be a good Halloween book.
funny
What an absolutely hilarious and thrilling novel by David Ellis.
I love it when an author is smarter than me, so much smarter than me that I think I have the novel figured out 34 times while I'm listening and I'm wrong about literally everything. Love that for me.
Simon and Vicky have a great life, even though they are in a boring, seemingly loveless marriage. When they both begin to stray, you wonder who you are rooting for? Simon a law professor, rediscovering a love from 20 years ago? Vicky, a recovering drug addict and former sx worker who is hoping for a big payout? Or are we rooting for Jane, the hard-nosed suburban detective who will stop at nothing to solve a series of crimes.
The story is told from 4 POV's (Vicky, Simon, Detective Jane, and Christian (no spoilers from me on who Christian is), and the timeline jumps around a bit, but it is easy enough to follow.
Each of the main characters was well developed, had their own way of speaking and thinking, and their own form of self-deprecating humor.
I almost forgot to mention the best character in the book: the city of Chicago. Ellis cites notable landmarks in the loop and the Mag Mile, but also gives very specific details about Wicker Park and the south side. If you are from Chicago- or live here- you'll realize exactly where he is talking about it. I love that...Mary Kubica is another author who uses Chicago liberally in her novels.
While the plot and coincidences all do come together in somewhat unbelievable but wonderful twists, I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. In fact, I even slowed the speed down to 1.5x and I usually listen to everything on 1.75x. But I wanted to make it last...
Lastly, Will Damron is an amazing voice actor!! Loved his interpretation of Simon...if only I was single and Simon was a real Chicagoan I might bump into downtown.
