I got this book during a 'Stuff Your Kindle Day' in 2023, and I did not know when I would be getting to it however I chose to put it on my March TBR and I am so glad I did as it was so good. I gave this book 4.25 stars and it was such a fun read, I loved the dragons aspect and the quarter aspect of where everyone lives (such as the stone quarter). I highly recommend this book and I cannot wait to read book 2 in this, and to see who the FMC ends up with! <3

Quotes:
  • “I hope my son eats you,” she viciously spat at me as I passed her, before turning on her heel and stalking off down the hallway. “Which one?” I shot back, unable to help myself.
  • “I've lived in the mud quarter my entire life, watching as the fireguards came every five years to select the prettiest girls to go to the Seat to start new lives and get it all: husbands, houses without a speck of dirt, and enough food that hunger wasn't a constant pain in your belly.”

Tropes:

  • Dragon Shifters
  • One POV
  • Why Choose
  • Love Triangle

I think this story had a great premise, but it felt under developed. Many things happens in the story that lacked thorough explanation or character development. This story seemed to be inspired by the Hunger Games and other popular fantasy novels, and at times very much felt like fan fiction.

The male love interests seem to instantly fall for the female main character. I would have been okay with that, if it was explained by a mate bond or other similar concept. But instead (from my understanding) it seems like they just think she’s the most incredible woman to ever exist and want her straight away. There is hardly any character develop or time spent between the love interests, so it feels unrealistic that they would have such deep emotions so quickly. Further, the relationship moves very very quickly, which seems strange given the main character didn’t even know about sex.

The Queen hates the main character. Not just hates her, but does everything in her power to humiliate the main character, tear her down, and have her killed. But there is literally no reason why that’s the case. It’s suggested that the Queen hates the main character because she’s from the mud quarter, but the level of venom displayed doesn’t match that explanation. The hatred is so deep and feels very out of place and over the top.

Finally, the main character is so incredibly naive and it made me want to pull my hair out. Soon after she arrives at the castle and learns a little more about the dragons, she instantly decides that she is going to fight to win the queen’s game, live in the palace to learn more about the curse (yet she can’t read???), and break the curse. She is so incredibly steadfast in her belief that not only can she break the curse, but she must be the only one who could possibly break it. I admire the passion, but the ignorance and naivety is infuriating.
