I needed a lighter read after finishing The Judas Rose (feminist dystopia), but I made my typical mistake and picked up Ten Steps to Nanette which might be funny, but isn't a relaxing read by any means. So I thought it might be the right time to pick up the last published Heartstopper I didn't read yet... well the theory behind that decision was good, but in reality this volume is much heavier than the previous ones and the narrative structure of the second half didn't work for me that well. Now, volume four is definitely not worse than the previous ones (which is why I gave it 5 stars despite my mixed feelings), so my guess is I'm just depressed and can't see things clearly. I'll probably write a second part of the review where I will actually say something about the book later.

I am absolutely loving the Heartstopper series and this volume just really added to the love. Talking about mental health is so important. The way Alice handled it is just simply amazing. She makes it clear how it is to have mental health problems, but also how to be of help when someone you love is having mental health problems. So important! I recommend this series to everyone for the lgbtq+ rep AND the mental health rep!

I only keep reading these because a friend of mine recommended me it and I can’t really read prose because of exams. This volume wasn’t so bad? I’ll probably only read more if I’m bored though. This volume wasn’t outstanding but maybe because I was expecting elementary level writing and got middle school writing instead. I liked how the ED was actually mentioned but I hated how the important parts were glossed over because we need more panels of Nick and Charlie kissing. The mom issue is stupid…? We get a single very normal argument and nothing ever builds up to anything with Tori.
The side cast has a semblance of an identity this time around but not enough. Ellie is Egyptian and while I appreciate the SWANA trans rep all I know about her is that she’s trans and Egyptian. Also, falafel to the beach? Really? The way her family and Darcy’s family are explained feels very tell not show and it barely affects the way they act at all. Maybe I need to stop reading about white queers talking about transphobia.
While I did mildly enjoy the volume it has all the hallmarks of heartstopper: bland characters with mental illness or homo/transphobia tacked on for a personality, contrived conflict, characters being either flawless saints or cartoonishly evil, nothing ever fucking happens. I did however like the side couples being given a dynamic and the group hanging out which should have definitely been done before Paris. The art is really good this time around and at times I can almost see the story giving a somewhat heartfelt message about the importance of a community that is not your boyfriend because he can’t fix you except it doesn’t do any of that and Nick fixes him anyways!

another stunning book
had me crying (not in a cool way) at the park in public
the mental health discussion is perfect
I love the fact that this book did not only deal with Charlie and Nick’s relationship but also their personal struggles
I’ll be reading every book Alice Oseman releases !
