Nope nope nope. So so weary of mysogynistic “classic” sci fi. Characters are flat (btw, fake future accents are absurd and irritating to read), plot slow and way too much bloat. Nope.

Holds up 45 years after publication. Took a popular apoplectic theme of the 70s, population explosion, and expanded the concept a 1000 years from now, with an alien species that had biologically couldn't control high birth rates, and competed them against mankind.

This is a long, involved, intriguing, character-driven, deeply enjoyable novel. It's science fiction of the old school done very, very well.
A brilliant and gripping book. One of the best jobs of creating a truly alien life form, culture and civilization, rather than the usual "aliens" who act just like human beings who happen to look different - and then going on to let the human reader see events through those alien eyes, from their perspective. The human characters are also well developed and the plot serves as a gripping mystery as well as an adventure story, and left me with a strong sense of empathy for the individuals of both civilizations being affected by forces larger than any one character.
I don't understand why this book is so loved. Maybe my expectations were too high. It's been a few months since I read this book and I cant remember a single characters name. And I can only vaguely remember most of the plot. I guess that's the problem with this book. Everything about it is forgettable except for the feeling of 'meh' I had the entire time reading it.
Really awesome, classic SciFi; a very creative characterization of a tense first-contact scenario.
This classic is full of great sci-fi concepts and really made me think on several occasions. The ancient alien race has a really cool evolution dynamic. The war politics and military intelligence theme was intriguing.
The character development bothered me however, I never felt much for the characters. I'm not sure if I'm going to pick up the rest of the series.
You can tell this book was written in the '70, which is nice if you like a little retro-futurism.
