The Beast

This book made me LOL. Literally. Reading about Rhage and Mary again made me love them even more. I cannot wait to see who's next.

I think this is one of my favorite BDB books ever. It's very slice-of-life with Rhage and Mary doing their thing. Although a lot happens not "a lot" happens. I know that doesn't make sense but if you read the book, know the characters, understand the over-arching story you'll get it. I loved the homey romantic feel of Rhange and Mary's struggle to be exactly who they were together and how JRW pulled that story together.

The Beast was a bit predictable at times, but jeez louise, it's book #14. It's just like knowing what your cousin or sib or close friend is going to do even in an odd situation. It's because you know them so well. And that is what makes these books, these characters, and JRW's way of inserting you into their world really fun and worth the occasional eye-roll or snort.

I loved all the Brothers in this book. Wish the Shadows had been around. Loved the water scenes (LITTLE MERMAID!!! BLOW UP SHARK!!!). Lassiter being both an annoying prick AND an asset. Rhage's Beast ("biggest lap dog on the planet"). Rhage's random ranting. Rhage's FOOD. I even enjoyed Layla's angsty pregnancy moments--JRW even made bed-rest interesting!

So yeah. Totally worth it. May go re-read Lover Eternal now, just for the warm squishies and Rhage ranting.

Mary and Rhage's story is one of my favorites and I loved it so much that I very recently reread it. So I absolutely loved being able to dive into this story back into their lives. Wow was it an emotional one. The very ending (maybe last 200 pages?) were so good. I couldn't stop smiling and then wanting to cry.

I started this book at the end of May. It took me two full months to read this book. It never takes me that long to finish a book. I finished two series and more in the time it took me to finish this book. All because the main storyline of this book was so predictable that I lost interest. I'm happy I continued reading though because the rest of the book almost made up for the horrible start. At one point I was crying like a baby. At work. If you're a reader of this series, this book is actually one of the better ones.

I’m certain other things happened in this book but I think this one was meant to be all about the kiddos. Layla gave birth to her and Qhuinns twins and they’re as healthy as can be expected for premie vampire babies and Rhage and Mary were able to adopt Bitty and she has assimilated into the household perfectly. Oh and Assail rescued a blood slave and decided to detox?! All good things!

hmmmm.... i wanted to love this one, but it was just okay for me. it got a little too cheesy for me at parts. i actually wasn't that into the Rhage and Mary story-line as much as I was the others that were going on.

Life has been relatively quiet for the Brothers of the Black Dagger. With everyone settled in their marital bliss, and threats from the Band of Bastards have been temporarily neutralized, it seemed we’re all heading into a state of freedom from chaos and disturbance…or so it seems. And so the novel opens with the Brothers at an all-out, no- holds-barred fight with the Lessening Society. For a time it looks like it was a fight that will end all fights – with the Brothers at the losing end of the stick. But the lessers didn’t account for Rhage’s beast.

Rhage, however, was distracted. Life is supposed to be perfect now that he’s got his shellan by his side. But he finds himself in a state of panic and anxiety for reasons he couldn’t pinpoint. It’s not that his feelings had changed for Mary; it’s the opposite, actually. He’s still madly in love with her and couldn’t see himself without her. So why, then can’t he shake off the feeling that something was missing?

I’ve been trying to capture the same excitement I’ve had for this series but it seems to have momentarily disappeared. There’d been so many books, it seems, but I’ll always remember why I looked forward to each instalment. It’s great to see the characters we’ve come to love but it’s hard to get excited about them nowadays. It’s not that I’ve grown tired of them, it’s just I found myself complacent and the plots have gone stagnant. Sometimes, I think this series will be best served with an introduction of new characters. But on the other hand, my loyalties lie with the original crew and so I don’t know if that would help. As it stands, I could’ve gone without the Shadow brothers. I didn’t think it added any value to the series. Right now, I can’t name a series plot point that has me interested enough to keep going.

At the same time, I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. Because the truth is, it gives me pleasure knowing that I’m up to date with a series that presently consists of 14 books. It’s my badge of honour. But I keep fervent hope that things will get exciting again.

I do like that we’re finally moving forward with Xcor and Layla. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for the next book to see it all play out. Rhage’s feeling of ennui worried me a little bit. I was worried that he was going to be a whiny little b*tch the entire time. Bemoaning about how his life sucks and what not. In the end, I like what happened to him and Mary. I still didn’t get the relevance of his beast, though. Perhaps it’s a…metaphor?

Can we as a society just agree to never use hashtags in books? #annoying

This book reminded me how much I adored Rhage. But seriously. ...I don't care about Layla and Xcor. I'm not thrilled that they're still adding new characters and I seriously don't care about the BOB. It was nice to see glimpses of the original crew and I did enjoy the humor and banter.

One of the best books (by J.R Ward) that I have read this year. I was so looking for to read more about Rhage and Mary since we don't see them very often in books :(

This book was amazing! The storyline to the character! Rhage and Mary is one of the best couples in this series, hands down!

I still CAN'T believe it's been over a year since I started this series. It just amazing how you just get draged into the book and can't stop reading.

Now I have to wait next year for The Chosen (#15) and to december for Blood Vow which is the second book in The Black Dagger Legacy series!!
