The Beast

J.R. Ward

4.3 AVERAGE

I loved, loved, loved this book. Mary and Rhage feature heavily, but there was plenty of the others to go around as well. The addition of Bitty to the brotherhood family is going to have a great impact on everyone. Assail who I love looks like being a great asset now that he is getting himself sorted, and his cousins are just so funny. Not everything was resolved for our main characters but that didn't bother me as these characters are constantly evolving. I think there was something for everyone in this book. With plenty of action a few laughs and a few surprises. Mainly in the form of Jo Early who looks to have a connection to Butch and Manny.

JR Ward is finally back to good writing

The Beast. But it was so much more about Mary. So much more about his shellen, her struggle, her reality and a void. A void that was growing onto a Grand Canyon type gap she was not willing to broach. There were parts that were a little over the top, a little to one-linerish (please don't end your sentences with hashtags), but the ending and the sub story with Assail and the blood slave....oy vey. Those last 20 pages about killed me - and talk about your stab in the heart, mouth dropping twist of a story! I was quickly trying to draw family lineage as that unfolded. That honestly is what saved this book for me. Let's hope this momentum stays with JR and we have less The Shadows and The King moments from here on out. Now it's off to finally read the spoilery notes from the signing.

The Beast is the 14th book in the BDB series. Counting the spin-off Legacy series book, Blood Kiss, I have now read 15 books with these characters. This is crazy!

If you haven't read the past couple of books and read earlier ones, you could probably pick this up. Just know that: Qhuinn and Blay are a pair, and Layla is pregnant by Qhuinn, and they kind of act like a large couple, but Layla isn't sexually involved with them; Assail dealt drugs to lessers but is now working peripherally with the Brothers; Xcor was leading a band of rebel vampires, but he left them, and the Brothers want intel out of him.

Rhage and Mary are recently out of sync with each other, but they're still very much in love. Rhage is harboring an unconscious death wish, and Mary has been stressed with her work at Safe Place (vampire domestic abuse shelter). They realize they want kids, but because of Mary's cancer, she is unable. Vampire adoption is rare because few mothers and babies survive the birth. Mary becomes close to an orphaned girl at Safe Place and wonders if things will turn out ok for her and Rhage.

It's a rather sweet plotline that doesn't mess with Mary and Rhage's relationship, and it's not too emotional. The middle of the book did drag, but the last quarter or so picks up and it finishes really nicely.

Rhage and Mary have always been my favorite couple. I always get bummed if a BDB book doesn't have any Mary in it. I also volunteered on a suicide hotline for a few years, and almost went to volunteer at a domestic violence shelter in undergrad (the timing didn't work out, as I was graduating), so I always feel a connection to Mary.

Minor plotlines: Layla pregnant with the twins, Vishous getting affected by Rhage's emotions, Jo Early (new human character investigating vampires), and Assail. Some other characters get a chapter or two, but it's short.

I enjoyed all the minor plotlines.

Assail was the best featured character! He does show his good side, and I think it's only going to show more in the next books. In the beginning of the story he's up to his regular behavior, but near the end he's changed. I had a hard time putting down the book at the end because I wanted to read his povs.
SpoilerThe whole Markcus plotline was so heart-wrenching. Is Assail going to start saving vampires that need help?

It's clear that Jo will be thrown in with the Brotherhood at some point. She's not a vampire or a lesser, so I'm sure she will mate up with someone, since she is meddling in vampire business. Her character grew on me through the story, even though I knew it's just a set-up for another book. There is a BIG reveal for her character at the end.

Layla, the female vampire who has been featured so much in the last few books, is finally getting her story told in The Chosen, which is being released soon. Such a long time coming, I don't think there is another character that has gotten that much pagetime without a HEA! I think Layla is my default favorite behind Mary because I've read so much about her.

Considering how many books I've read in this universe, as I was reading I reflected on how well I remembered the characters.

I completely forgot about Phury and Cormia, and also Tohr's shellan Autumn (for her barely a recollection, I was like - who is this?). Forgot that Rehvenge and Ehlena were a pair...and I mix up Payne and Xhex. Vishous was kind of murky, I kept confusing him with Phury, probably because I can't remember much of Phury. I mix up Bella and Beth's names since they are so close, but I do remember them each distinctly.

There are so many characters in these books that at this point, only the more recent ones, and the characters that have a really distinct personality, stand out to me. It didn't detract from my reading of the book, as Ward always does a good job reintroducing characters in each book. Definitely excited to read The Chosen with Layla and Xcor.

Can I give it.. like 10 stars ? One of my favs until now.
Way to go, Mom.

Where to start?! Isn't that the big question. There's so much to say and caffeine isn't working as well as I hoped. I absolutely adored this book! It went straight to my favorites shelf. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. This is one of my absolute favorite series of all times. My favorite in this genre by far. I fell in love with this world years ago, and I can't picture myself living without new books every year anytime soon. I live for this. I love how at first everyone was finding love, and now they are struggling with life and real problems. I love seeing all the character development. In the first books sometimes I got mad with all the POVs, now?! I live for them. As much as I love Rhage and Mary, I also love most of the other POVs. And let's do this review like this. I will talk of each POV character at a time. I'll try and talk about them in my order of preference. Enfase on the try.

But before moving on, I have to say this book dried me of tears. Like a hundred of times. And gave me so many heart attacks at one point I couldn't even feel my heart anymore. This author pulled my heart from my chest and then stepped on it. Several thousand of times. And then if that wasn't enough she also ripped my soul apart. There were times I felt like I was being wrecked from the inside out. I sobbed so hard I thought the whole neighbourhood could hear me. Sometimes with happiness true. But with that I could live. Unfortunately, this book wasn't all unicorns and rainbows. And after the previous book, that's saying something. I shed a lot more tears in this book. By far.

So first of all, Rhage and Mary's. Since this book main focus was on these two we had a lot of chapters in their perspective. I really liked being back into their minds. Seeing them struggle but always together, always there for each other. What we saw with Wrath and Beth, with these two?! Never. They always find a way to deal with things. They talk, they don't talk, they make sex, they make love. But they go through things the best way, in harmony. It's fucking beautiful.
And Bitty! At first I wasn't sure what to think about her. There was something off going on with her. But once she spilled her secrets… *hearty eyes* I loved seeing her get to know Mary, but seeing her with Rhage?! That was pure bliss, heaven!
Spoiler I simply adored seeing her getting to see Mary and Rhage as her parents. Seeing her struggle with her emotions and watching our lovely couple being there to help her. I adored her knowing Rhage's beast. It was perfection. All their dates were tbh.
And Bitty going into the mansion for the first time?! Meeting everyone?! John's reaction? Qhuinn's? ZSADIST'S?!. Oh boy, if I wasn't crying like there was no tomorrow.
OHHHHH and Rhage thinking about Betty mating?! If that didn't brought ALL the feels!!!!!! I can picture him and Z ripping guys balls off only for looking at Nalla and/or Bitty the wrong way. I hope we get to see it. Because I need it in my life. And Mary and Wrath shipping Bitty and LW?! Bring on, baby. I'm all for that ship.

Then there's Vishous. I'm so happy that we had so many chapters from his perspective. He's my absolute favorite btw, if life gave me a Vishous I'd be the happiest girl on Earth. I'd never ever complain about anything in my life ever again. I loooooove seeing him with Butch. And I adore seeing him with Jane. And you the question. Jesus fucking Christ if I wasn't left with my jaw on the floor and my heart trying to burst from my chest while tears streamed down my face. The answer wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it was better than what I expected. I'm happy with a someday instead of a never. And I'm so hoping for a Vishous's book sometime soon. I think it will he either the 16th or the 17th.
And….Vishous helping Rhage?! Lord in heaven. If that wasn't a heart warming, fuzzy feeling for me. I swear to everything dear dear to me, I almost died while reading this book.
SpoilerAlthought after Vishous's encontour with death while holding little Lyric in his hands gives me hope it will be sooner rather than later. I can't die without seeing Vishous being a dad. I refuse to. I needed like I need oxygen. I'm really hoping the Sanctuary will give them an opportunety sooner rather than later. Not that I wish ill upon any female. No. But…I need it.

Now it's Layla, Xcor, Qhuinn and Blay's. Even if we didn't have Blay's POV and very few chapter from Xcor and Qhuinn's perspectives I think it's appropriate to talk about them all together. Let's start with the fact that I'm pretty sure next book will be Layla and Xcor's. And I'm hoping for an between the Bastards and the Brotherhood once and for all. I think the biggest problem will be with Tohr. And he has all the reasons. I know. But he has to grow some self restraint and deal with it. Because I can't deal with Layla having to pick between Qhuay and Xcor. That wouldn't be fair to anyone. She wouldn't leave the Brothehood. And Xcor already had his fair shair of pain and injustice. So pls, Ward, give me him a HEA.
And in these POV I had the worst of my heart failures. And there were a lot of them let me tell you. Everything pregnancy related gave so much anxiety I almost chocked on air. And Xcor?! Jesus for a moment I was really worried. Well, I still am. I needed more. At least one more chapter from his POV.
And I have to say that I love how everyone treats Qhuay and Layla like a unit. No one blinks and eye on how they work as two future dads and one mom. How they both feed Layla, and even if Blay didn't sire the babes, he's always part of the important decisions and he's always there no matter what. I love all the dynamic
SpoilerWhy hasn't anyone found out about Layla and Xcor?!?! He's in pain! Can you imagine him as a bonded male, knowing his female is giving birth to twins, before her time was due?! The pain he must be in. Can you fucking imagine it?! Because I can. Just thinking about it makes me want to hug him tight. Just please, Lassiter almighty. Angel who knows it all. Please go and tell him. Please.
Speaking of babes and labor. FUCKING SHIT! I DIED READING THAT PART. Qhuinn's scream reverberated in my soul and shattered it. I really though the young was dead. And I died right alongside him. The pain I felt. I have no words to describe it. It was Clockwork Princess level. I had to put the book down, and sob into my pillow. I hated the author so much in that moment. I couldn't believe she had given us that vision just to kill the babe before she even had the chance to be in her father's arms. I'm crying right now just thinking about it. But thankfully Vishous saves the day, with Payne's help. And Qhuinn's. And Blay's. And the fact that he didn't give up for a single second makes me love him so much more than I already did. I didn't think I could love him more, but with each book my love for him grows.
And the babes names!!!! I loved the girl's name, and the meaning. Bless Layla and her thoughtfullness. The boy's name is gorwing on me. I'm sure I'll love it eventually. But it's such a badass name for such a small baby.

Assail, I have good news about him. Remember how I much I disliked him?! It's changing! In this book he kind of grew on me. First with the seduction plan, then with the hero moment and then with hi last decision. Now we just need to get rid of Sola, turn him gay, and I'll be Team Assail until the end of my days.
SpoilerTHIS FUCKING DEAL WITH THE BLOOD SLAVE made me see RED!!!! I was so fucking mad. Jesus. I swear I felt myself fuming. Who the hell she thinks she is to keep a Blood Slave?! Jeez, I'd have murdered her barehanded in that moment if given the chance.
But thank fuck, Assail succeded in being the hero of the day and got that poor male out of that prison. Let's say that Z's reaction broke me. Yet again. Even the way Assail reacted made me cry. I don't even know where all of that came from, but I'm so glad it did. If I liked him when he decided to push himself on Throe, in here I fell in love. Head first.

New human characters time. I'll manily focus on Jo. I don't really care or like any of the others. I like this one. And I'm hoping she will find someone nice. But who?! Is Ward getting ready to write The Band of Bastards books?! Or is she trying to make a lesbian couple? She is not going for Lassiter right? I like her. But jeez, Lassiter deserves a epic female. Jo doesn't qualify for that, sorry.

Finally, Throe. That son of a mother. When can he die? If she needs someone to slit his throat, where can I sign up?! I'm really tired of him and his schemes to bring Wrath down. Maybe Wrath and Xcor can find some common ground in this and bond over killing the fucker. I appreciate that idea so very much.

In this book we got to see almost every single character. All the couples were mentioned at least once and most of them showed up. I loved seeing Nalla and LW !!! I'm so happy with them and their parents. And when is Aghony being finally introduced?! Don't tell me we will have to have another book focused on Phury for that. As much as I love him, I don't think I want another book focused on him.
And every single moment when the Brothers got together, either because they were worried sick or because they were playing a prank on someone or were in mourning or saving someone's ass, goodness. I dare you to tell me I didn't actually died and gone to heaven for a couple of seconds. I dare you. I simply adore their bond! Not only among the Brothers but also with Rehv, iAm and Trez, Blay, John. Everyone! And the way Payne is part of that?! Girl power! I wish she has a chance to enter the Brotherhood officially. Since now…
SpoilerThe fucking Virgin is dead! WTF! I was kind of seeing it coming, but fuck. Deep down I never really thought it would actually happen. I thought that maybe they would find a way to revive her. And wasn't she the one for Lassiter?! Not that I'm complaining. I really didn't like her all that much, and I love Lassiter. But if you really put your mind to it and imagine them together. It would be absolutely epic. Imagina Lassiter as V's step dad. Only that and my mind goes into I NEED THIS TO HAPPEN. Now tho, I don't see it coming.
And who is going to be the next God?! She said it wouldn't be neither V nor Payne. Who else then?! My mind comes to Lassiter again. He would be a hell of a Vampire God, just give him the fangs.

As for the next books let's see. The 15th must be Xcor and Layla's. Then the next two will be Vishous *praying on this one* and Assail's, which I'm more in peace with right now. And then I have absolutely no idea. I have a feeling both the nurse, Rhym, and Jo will be important. But will they be together? Or will they find somoene? A Bastard maybe? And let's not forget Mhurder and the new character Marckus. And Lassiter. Never forget Lassiter. I can't wait for news!!!!

I just can't even breathe right now! JR Ward out did herself with this one. It was nothing that I expected and yet everything I needed!! ❤️❤️❤️

In this new addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series we get to see more about Rhage and Mary. For some time they've been struggling with a distance in their relationship that none on them knew where it came from.
they were given a gift when the Scribe Virgin not only saved Mary but allowed them to be together and they love each other so much that they tought that was enough but with time and the new kids in the house they start to realize maybe they want more.
They talk to each other and try to understand each other and no matter what they always support each other. I love this couple.

We spend some time with Jo, a human girl whos friend might have recorded Rhage's beast and coupled with other things she finds online she tries to make some research about vampires.
Spoiler it was heavily implied that she's not who she thinks she is, she might be a pretrans and Many's sister.

Something really big happens with Xcor, i'm so freaking worried about him!

Layla, oh Layla, she discovers a secret involving Tohr and Xcor, if you read the series you might have already guessed this. Her pregnancy advances.
Spoiler we finally meet the little twins! i'm so happy for Qhuinn, the little girl's name is Lyric, after Blay's mom and the little boy is named by Wrath, Rhampage.

Assail, i'm so prud of him, he did good.

I'm definitely curious about Throe, the first time i met him i liked him but with every new book i trust him less and less, he's too shady.

Oh and something huge happens with the Scribe Virgin so trust me this book is full great moments.

Rhage is my BDB boyfriend, yes i love Qhuinn and Blaylock but i love them as a couple. My love for Rhage is different, when i first started the series i read the first 5 books in like 3 days and i love all the brothers but Rhage stole my heart because he was not just his looks and he's so funny and adorable.

Last year when The Shadows came out i was so pissed at Ward, first i've been waiting the Xcor and Layla book for so long and nada then the whole thing with Trez was just too sad and i just couldn't deal with that so when she announced The Beast i was excited because my baby Rhage but at the same time, again not Xcor and Layla and after the shadows and the king i was not very hopeful, i have to confess i even skipped some chapters in those books.

But Warden did it again, she made me fall in love with this series all over again, it wasn't just Rhage that i loved but all the POV's and stories were really good.
I wanna know more about Jo.
I want Assail to get better and see where his story is going.
Xcor mein gott! yes i had to say it in fraking german! i'm just a mess, his book needs to be next!
Little Bitty was a delight, at first i wasn't sure about her but she captivated my heart.

5 HOLLYWOOD IS BAAAACK stars!

I am emotionally not ready to review this book.

Black Dagger Brotherhood fans know the struggle. We get 1 book a year and it's so intense, these are huge books, 500+ pages each and yet I read this in one day, while I did a bunch of other stuff including work. IN. A. DAY. I'm a fast reader, experience and all, but when it comes to the BDB books I set a new record each time. I literally read this in a day and it was the most amazing reading experience.

It always amazes me how I can dive back into this world and remember every detail from the last time, and read it without getting tired or getting restless. No, it's truly something I wait for every year. And each year it's just as amazing.

Back to reviewing.

Well...

The Beast (Black Dagger Brotherhood #14)

It's Hollywood. And Mary.  And the story start's with Vishous saying this to Rhage.

“You're going to fucking die tonight.”

That's when I fucking died. I just did. But Vishous is Vishous and his mom - I truly hate her - is a deity and all. So yeah... things happen. No thanks to her.

Back to Rhage and Mary because they're officially having the baby talk which I was kind of expecting it to happen sooner with all the pregnancies in the house, first Bella, Layla and then Beth and Layla still going through it, so yeah, the Beast was perfectly timed as usual to deliver yet another beautiful story.

thebeast

Rhage, is the handsome/Beastly brother with his dragon and all. Mary is the human/not so much human now. And they make the most unlikely adorable and hot couple. Hollywood is a sweetheart - like all the Brothers - when it comes to Mary. And now Mary has a few issues to deal with at work.

Gradually the BDB world has been doing a lot of human stuff, or a little less traditional stuff. It happened with Phurry, then with the King himself, Qhuinn and Blay and now Rhage. Because he and Mary finally get to adopt a baby.

“Rhage! You have a dragon! A pet dragon! I got to rub his tummy!”

Well, a child actually; Bitty and her mother was introduced last time as the Brothers saved her and her mom from her father and now Mary is trying to find any relatives to take care of her. But there is none. And after a lot of talking and a lot of paperwork and interviews, which Rhage rocked to be honest, it's official!

And I got a tiny bit of Z too! ♥

“Z was the last to come over, and as he opened his arms wide, for some reason, the slave bands that had been tattooed around his throat and wrists stood out to her.”

It was the sweetest way to get those two to finally include a child into their little family. Due to reason they both had been deprived of the choice but now things have changed in more ways than one.

I never know what to spoil so I won't say anything.

P.S: Qhuinn and Blay and Layla, you guys let me hug you please! And THAT ENDING WHOA!

The next book is [b:The Chosen|29863848|The Chosen (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #15)|J.R. Ward|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png|50230679] and it's about Layla and Xcor, now that will be interesting to read mostly because HOW?! Till next year... *cries*

This one goes back to Rhage and Mary. But they also adopt a little girl named Bitty. This book is one of my favorites because we've seen already some of Rhage and Mary's vulnerabilities, but in this one we TRULY see Rhage's inner vulnerabilities as well as his inner beast. We see Mary's maternal instincts coming out, and we see all the brothers band together for the sake of this little girl and her new family.
