Copra is a Suicide Squad homage done in an odd style using colored pencils, charcoal, and other materials. I think I would have gotten more out of it if I was at all a fan of the Suicide Squad. It's pretty much The Suicide Squad gets betrayed and goes looking for some payback while on the run. It was okay but didn't hold my interest and I have no plans to read the rest of the series.

About as close to a pure, auteur comic as you'll find

Rereading this in 2023:

This is a four star colored pencil art book. It's a great homage to 80s comics drawn in a unique style that really pulls you in.

The story is nonsense. The characters are forgettable even though their designs are fantastic. I had zero desire to keep reading the story when I got to the ened of the volume because absolutely nothing had stuck with me as I read it.

I see people comparing it to [b:Doom Patrol, Vol. 1: Crawling from the Wreckage|22355|Doom Patrol, Vol. 1 Crawling from the Wreckage|Grant Morrison|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1543991820l/22355._SY75_.jpg|23381] and [b:Suicide Squad: From the Ashes|3099738|Suicide Squad From the Ashes|John Ostrander|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348903191l/3099738._SY75_.jpg|92242309], but those had recognizable plots and solid characters. This is just kind of Generic Badass Superpeople are freamed for crime and must work together to ... umm ... to do something, I guess because otherwise why does this book exist?

The art bumps this up from two to four stars. I own the next five volumes of this series, so I'll at least flip through them and see if it gets better, but the first volume does not give me high hopes.

I appreciate Fiffe as a comics creator, but I just haven't read enough of the comics he's riffing on here (mostly Suicide Squad, with bits of other series thrown in for good measure) to fully appreciate the tribute / pastiche he's going for, so it didn't land with me.

The art was not my thing, it was messy and flat. The colouring was not bad. I couldn’t really figure out the plot, as little as there was. Too much text that is not easy on the eye.

I am not a big fan of characters that are just mean for no obvious reason and don‘t seem to have any redeeming features.

A solid hybrid of pure comic book expressionism and solid genre storytelling, and if my enjoyment tends more to one end of that spectrum than the other that's mostly just a matter of taste.
