So I don’t know how I feel about this book....
Was I hooked? Yes
Did I finish it in a day? Yes
Did I like it? I don’t know how to answer that.
The premise is creepy and twisty, but the characters- especially the MC- were hard to like. I get that this is a redemption arc of sorts but it was hard to reconcile. I don’t know, I finished it and felt weird about what I just read.

The book was definitely suspenseful! I was a little bothered by the way the story flipped from them being in the room and the past, but towards the end of the book it made more sense why the author wrote it that way. Overall, great quick suspense read!
This was a pretty easy read and I think it had great character development... all up until the end. I didn’t buy the ending and didn’t find it close to the characters’ nature that was built throughout the novel. Very rushed ending too?
I’d read another Diana Urban book because the writing was definitely my speed, but hopefully future plots get worked out a bit better.

the writing felt a little… obvious? idk how to put it but the story started with amber basically saying “omg my jock bf can’t figure out i like the school nerd!!” and the book just kept trying to cement their roles all the time in the first half of the book. we get it, this is a breakfast club thingy. move on.
there was no suspense or twists. we knew the true target , it’s not like the story tried to confuse us by making everyone look a little suspicious and shitty . it was also no surprise who put them there. like, even if you read without trying to figure it out, when they reveal it, it’s just like “yeah”.
i didn’t care about any of the characters; everytime something was presented about their life to make me feel sympathetic, i just didn’t care. even when the subjects were heavy (su*cide, bullying, addiction), they were written in a way that felt shallow.
anyway, this was completely underwhelming to me.
Graphic: Bullying, Drug abuse, Toxic friendship
Moderate: Suicide
I’m all for time-sensitive thrillers but this was a mess. Between the messy character development, the confusing jumps between plots, I don’t even know where to begin. Actually I do, right at the end. Seriously? Why are there NO consequences? The author has the right idea: Dinner party turned lethal escape room with characters similar to those of “One of Us is Lying” But just terrible execution.
I give it 4 stars for the twists and turns. HOWEVER please know there are some serious TWs associated with this book. Read wisely.
I love unreliable narrators! They're so much fun and make the story more interesting to me. This is the second time I read this book and I loved looking for the signs and hints.
I thought I would only be giving this book a 4 last night when I finished it. But, when a book invaded my dreams, and this one did just that, it must have earned a 5!!! The whole concept for the book is just awesome.......sort of an escape room + mystery + coming-of-age tale and I DIG IT!!! And the ending?!?!?!? What?!?!?!? So good. So so good.
