I picked this up because for years I listened to Linda Wertheimer and Nina Totenberg on NPR and watched Cokie deliver conventional wisdom on This Week with George Stephanopolis. I never loved Cokie. She always seemed to be trying to not offend. But of course, I also never gave a thought to how she arrived in that chair and what her journey was.
This book is really a book all women should read since we really are riding on their shoulders. It made me proud of all four women. I could imagine their determination and dogged ambition. As someone who was a kid when these women were reporting on Vietnam, I grew up taking equal rights for granted and not until the last four years, did I think we needed to raise our signs in sisterhood.
However, we are seeing a strong assault against the protections these women fought so doggedly to win for us. And we owe it to them and their sisterhood to stop the slippage.
I don't think the writing style is memorable but it is clear and does convey the story well.
It's definitely worth a listen...and if you have a daughter who is 10 or older, have her listen with you. A great mother-daughter conversation starter.

I learned SO MUCH from this book and gained an even deeper appreciation for NPR, the Women's Movement, and of course, the Founding Mothers of NPR. I liked that although it was biographical, the author explored briefly the history of many people, mostly women, in this book. The contrasts drawn between women in the working world in the 1970's to now are appropriately dramatic. I really enjoyed the read and hope the author does more with NPR's history and modern leadership as well.
A fascinating look at NPR’s founding mothers, but also a view of history of working women in the US as well as US history in the 70s and 80s.
I especially liked that we see the women’s humanity. None of them are perfect, but all four are admirable.
For most of the book, the weaving in and out of various lives and events is easy to follow. The epilogue seems to meander more than the rest and made it hard to see it as part of the book.
I read an electronic version of the book and loved being able to go directly to referenced material that was online.
Napoli has extensive citations both of specific sources for information and background material she reviewed in writing the book.
It’s astonishing that she was able to publish the book just as NPR is celebrating its 50th anniversary. She began work on it in late 2019 and did much of the work during the pandemic.

Informative but not very well-written sadly. Ended up reading more like of a history of NPR than the story of the 4 “founding mothers”
This was a quick and good read for me. I admire all these women greatly but didn't know their back story. I started listening to NPR in the early 2000s. The only thing the audio was missing was some NPR-style clips of the wonderful Susan, Linda, Nina and Cokie to hear their voices. Good thing I can still call those voices up in my head. Especially Susan talking about her cranberry relish and Nina at the supreme court.
