Very confused at all the high ratings, it reads like something I'd find in a grocery store discount bin next to plastic "wine o'clock" cups. Nothing happens, way too much focus on the annoying family. Cringe millennial tourists bickering. Extremely tired ghost tropes with cold spots, top of the stairs pushes, doors slamming, kids playing with ghosts, like the horror is an afterthought. The protagonist is just soooo different and intelligent and hot and wanted and mistaken for a local. Humor where? There's no satire, and there's nothing funny whatsoever. Not that it's just not my humor, I can't recall a single attempt at anything humorous. If you don't want to think too hard and half-listen to it on the beach or something it's incredibly mid and bland enough.

Family vacation at a haunted Italian villa that preys on Anna, the black sheep, and tears the family apart bit by bit. Loved the Italian setting and family drama. The pacing was slower, but made for a great buildup of tension and satisfying ending.

Diavola was an engrossing read that pulled me in from the start. I found the pacing well-balanced, with a steady build that maintained tension without becoming predictable. Anna, the main character, felt incredibly real—her thoughts and reactions were believable, layered, and guided the story in a way that made it easy to stay invested. Her character development was subtle but effective, grounding the more surreal aspects of the plot in something emotionally tangible.
The writing was sharp, and the author struck a great balance between atmosphere and narrative drive. I particularly appreciated how the story gave just enough information to keep you guessing without revealing its hand too early. That said, the final 10% of the book didn’t quite land for me. The tone shifted rather abruptly, and the climax, while conclusive, lacked the emotional depth and nuance that had been carried so well throughout the rest of the novel. Still, the overall resolution was satisfying, and despite my reservations, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.

Yea I really liked this one. It was scary and funny and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. This has such mixed reviews and I'm genuinely confused as to why!
