This is a super-enjoyable mystery-thriller about a young Australian woman who is approached by a man who claims that she was abducted at age two, and that he is her brother. Told in intertwining narratives from the past and present I was engaged right from the get-go. Not too many good guys and bad guys, but lots of people caught up fiercely in their own beliefs and way of life. The author had me guessing right to the end. Will be looking for future novels by #christianwhite.

Brilliant debut novel, it had me turning pages as fast as I could to figure out the twist and what had happened.
im really not sure where to even begin with this book. Christian white is a genius, an this methodical, well thought out mystery novel is a testimony to that. This book follows the story of a girl who is approached by a man who thinks that she is a missing child.
Something about the writing of this novel made it feel incredibly real, and just how close to reality this story is made it quite unnerving. The story felt like i was reading a book about a real case that occurred and has bene solved.
The chapter time jumps kept you hooked on the story, going from the ‘now’ in which would end the chapter on a small cliff hanger to which you then jump back in time, to the ‘then.’ i thoroughly enjoyed getting to know different characters in the now and then, getting to know kim (sammy) and her whole family, as well as stu, to then jump back to the past to meet different characters from sammy’s life.
The story also unravels super organically, there were quite a few twists, and it truly felt like we were discovering things with the characters. I also loved how, going back in time the reader is lead to believe that they have got answers, but then later on have that be detested. The final reveal, wasn't a shock, but sort of like an ‘i should’ve known that’ moment. The whole novel set up for one thing, and it wasn't until i truly thought about it did i realise what the slight twist was.
I also LOVE the ambiguity in the ending, and the questions this ending left me. The idea of who really was the bad guy, because Patrick stole her from her family, but was stealing her from the weird cult. But again was KIDNAPPING a child.
I also felt just incredibly sorry for sammy, just picturing that little baby was so sad.
The only plot point i don't quite get, is why he had the sister write her name, like i get the plot relevance but also having her sister write that didn't make sense. The sister didnt want her to die, and i feel like its a kind of fucked up thing to do, especially if you dont have a deep hatred for someone.
I also would not market this as a thriller, i wasn't really that scared, its a really REALLY great mystery.
Anyways i cant help but give it 4.5 stars because it was super good, it kept me hooked, and i really liked it. Would i say its better than the silent patient No.
Like super close to 5 stars, even though on here ill give it 5. Idk im indecisive, but it was super good.
