This book is not what I thought it would be based on the blurb. It sounded as though it were a magical realism story about dress witches and the charms they cast. It is not. This was barely mentioned except for quotes in the opening chapters featuring Soline. It was disappointing. It was almost a disconnect from the story except that the magic was used to justify the extremely unbelievable coincidences. It felt like a cop out.
I found the historical story more interesting and it did keep me engaged. The current story annoyed me because Rory going on about the difficulties of her very privileged life grated my nerves. While, yes, the part about Hux was tragic, the rest of her woes were ridiculously overdramatic. Rory's treatment of her mother was horrible, from standing her up for brunch, to showing up at her home and being indignant that she had friends over to acting like she was being abused when her mother wanted to take her shopping. I mean...come on....
The mother was too one dimensional and almost a caricature of a society wife. I was surprised that it was rated so high by so many but I suspect it is because it has that whole Hallmark Romance Movie vibe that many people love. However, that is not my kind of book. My kind of book would have been about the dress witches and their experiences.

What a beautiful historical fiction! I did not want to put this down! This story broke my heart just to put it back together on several occasions! I loved the dual time lines and how the flash backs were timed so well to move the current story forward. Definitely recommend!
