4.5 I really enjoyed the book. Took a while to get going but the end really made up for it but did feel a little rushed

Barbara Davis definitely knows how to tell a beautiful story. My third book by this author and I’m in love with her writing.

Nice sweet, story. A bit predictable. A tale of heartache, challenging familial relationships, and new beginnings.
Three stars to the first, extremely long half of this book. Five stars to the last third. And, I guess, four stars to everything in between.
If you can get through the first part, you'll be rewarded at the end.

Slow start, but once it got going it was hard to put down. The ending was a bit contrived.

The French accent on the audio was too hard for my US Southern accent to understand.
Predictable and implausible
This might be a good post-COVID book if you are looking for escapist fantasies as this certainly ends up as all rainbows and unicorns. Up there with every mediocre rom-com, and this book would make great one. The whole story is very light and fluffy, even the early parts that are meant to be show tragedy and suffering. Told from the point of view of two characters, I found the writing in the Soline sections, told in the first person, to really drag. I eventually scanned and skipped thru much of the inner monologue here. The Rory section, third person narrative, was better. But once the story becomes more interesting - 2/3rds of way in! - it is hampered by constant repetition as the dialogue consists of the characters explaining the same thing over and over to others. This does happen in life but in literature there are better devices to use. Almost from the beginning I could guess what was going to happen and I was right each time! An easy read but in the end not a very satisfying one.
