A wonderful love story.

———————————-
“People always find a way to justify their hate—and give others an excuse to fall in line. They put words in people’s mouths, plant them like viruses, then watch them spread.

But life has taught me that even in fairy tales, the heroine must make her own magic—or not, as the case may be.”

Pain has a way of hardening us, each new heartbreak laying down a fresh layer of protection, like the nacre of a pearl, until we think ourselves impenetrable, immune to both our present and our past. What fools we are to believe it.

“How a person behaves toward us is never about us, Rory. It’s about them.”

I enjoyed the magical realism of this book….although I didn’t think it was woven into the ending of the story as much as it could have been. It was not a central or essential element so I was kind of wondering why it was there at all. The writing was well done and the story intriguing. It kept me hooked. However it took way too long in the end to wrap up. But mostly I enjoyed it and would recommend it!

I enjoyed reading this book, it passed the time. However, the characters seemed a bit unrealistic at times (they came across like plot devices, especially Camilla and Anson). The plot of this story is a more along the lines of "rich people problems" than any real conflict or historical narrative.

Loved! ❤️ Just as I loved "The Last of the Moon Girls". Even though I kinda predicted what would happen about half way, I loved how it all revealed itself with a little "la magie".

YAYYY!!! I wouldn’t say there were many surprises in this one, but I loved the whole story - the beginning, the middle, the end! I was afraid it’d be wrapped up without a very important (to me) question answered, but all the loose ends were tied into a neat, wonderful, happy bow.

When a book group I am in picked this book I didn't think that I would read it. I tend to stay away from things dealing with Nazi Germany because so many try to romanticize the Nazis. I'm very glad that I picked it up. It is wonderfully written with beautiful details. The plot is much more complex than I thought it would be. It has love, it has intrigue, there are twists and turns. Definitely one of the best books I've read this year.
