If you liked Last of the Moon girls you’ll probably like this one too. Unfortunately, I didn’t like Last of the Moon girls all that much and didn’t realize it was the same author until half way into the book.
The family relationships in this book could be so interesting and it could even be a really good family drama and about breaking generational trauma.
Three things ruined the book:
1. The audio version is horrible. The voices are stilted and unnecessarily shakey with a lot of inhales before speaking in a “timid” sort of way. It got very annoying. I kept wondering if I would like it better had I read it.
2. But the author tells a little more than shows, which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. She doesn’t really trust the reader to read between the lines and gather what’s happening without her spelling it out for you.
3. It’s completely predictable, but then also completely implausible. The book even part way acknowledges how conveniently it all works out in the end which makes it even worse. Like it knows how “pat” the ending is made no changes.
Anyway it’s… fine?

I really loved this book- a tale of loss and love, grief and pain but with a joyous happy ending. Barbara Davis always writes such unique stories and I’m pulled in and can’t put them down.
My only complaint, if you can even call it that, is that I wish there’d been a little more magic threaded through the story.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc

Nice little fluff book where everything wraps up with a nice big bow on top. I did enjoy the back and forth between Soline and Rory’s stories, and while I did suspect some of the twist, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment. I did find that the shift in the mother’s attitude towards the end seemed a but sudden and unrealistic and same with AWP, but I still enjoyed it overall. Could’ve used one or two less frothy lace descriptions.

Soline's family was the proud owners of a prestigious bridal boutique in Paris, but her life was forever altered by a tragic event during World War II. Many years later, Rory is grappling with her own grief when she stumbles upon Soline's belongings in an art gallery she is leasing from Soline. As Rory returns these items to their rightful owner, a surprising bond forms between the two women. It seems as though fate had orchestrated their meeting, bringing Soline and Rory together in an unexpected and meaningful way.

I really liked this book! I listened to it, so it took me a chapter to get used to the French accent. But after that, I thoroughly enjoyed the different voices and their different, but parallel, stories. A book about loss and how we all cope and attempt to heal and move forward.
What an amazing audio book. I was blown away by this book and this author and she fast becoming one of my favourite writers.
This follows the life of Soline a French seamstress who we meet during the Second World War in Paris. As the city changes with the arrival of the Nazis, she suffers loss but also meets her the love of her life.
In present day we meet Soline who has sheltered herself off from society and she meet Rory who wants to rent the building owned by Soline and discovers a box which belongs to Soline.
As the story weaves from present to past we learn Soline’s life story from Paris to her move overseas to the United States and the people she meets along the way.
Rory becomes in present day an important part of her life and as secrets and lies are uncovered life will change for Soline completely.
It was such a beautiful book, it make me cry, it gave me a warm cuddle and I was addicted to it completely.
Another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from this author ♥️♥️♥️
