This is a beautiful and magical book which I adored. It well deserves being on the Carnegie shortlist. The writing is similar to that of Hilary McKay - if you love her style you will love this too. A story of love and loss, of finding yourself and your true talents - as well as magical realism. I can’t recommend this enough.

What a wonderfull, gorgeous story. I now understand why my kids like this one even more than The Neverending story.

I read the original Dutch version of this story called Lampje.
As far as I can tell it is published in English under two different names, last year as Lampie and the Children of the Sea , and this year it will be published as Of Salt and Shore
If you are interested in slightly surreal middle grade fantasy stories, I would recommend this. It is about mermaids, and is written in a very enchanting and atmospheric way. It is difficult to describe the style, but it felt different than most other stories for this age group I have read.
I would definitely recommend it if the summary seems interesting to you.
