Cool concept for the magic system/lore, but the plot was really confusing with too many characters, I don't love a dual timeline, and I didn't like the ending. The author told us the same obvious things loads of times but didn't explain a lot of the connections between characters and events enough for me to feel satisfied when the plot concluded because I didn't really know what I was meant to be waiting for. As other people have said, the main character is meant to be 28 but reads like an 18 year old.

Very slow start, 100 good pages before it became bland and made little sense. Main character could have been explored so much more. It felt like this book had been written in 2 days and never re-read after.

I have to start by saying that I really like Holly Black, and I really liked the ending of this book.

However, I had an incredibly hard time with the first half of the book. I was confused about the magic system, and I couldn't keep track of the characters. I think part of the issue is that with working while I listened to the audiobook I didn't always catch the transitions between the current and past event chapters. To be honest it didn't hook me either in the beginning, so if I hadn't listened to the audiobook so fast I might have missed out on the second half that I really enjoyed because based on the beginning I would have DNF'd it.

Over all the book had a relatively interesting premise and promising start. The “twists and turns” that happened during it were not exciting to discover and things that I didn’t connect did not feel rewarding.

The characters are certainly built to not be likable. They are bad people who do bad things. I am unsure if the author wants the reader to like them despite the bad things. The characters are essentially bad people fighting worse people.

Another issue I took with this book is that Black very clearly does not know how to write a “curvy” (as she describes Charlie) lead female character. Charlie was described/described herself as having  “too much in [insert body part here]” and that it was crazy that a hot guy like her boyfriend would be interested in her. As a woman who falls into the category of Charlie’s size (which is eventually explicitly stated) I can attest to the fact that there are better ways to write characters like her.

I also felt like certain points were exhausted by the author repeating them over and over again. The ending was disappointing and it felt as if there were many things explained away.
