I quite liked the first chapter when the narrator responded to her neighbour saying she found his marriage recounting to be flawed. It’s charming to think that someone would respond to another person’s story by means of a literary evaluation. There were some lovely insights but to be honest though I quickly bored of everyone seemingly having complete access to their motives and speaking in effectively the same tonality. Smart but safe book.

Well this writing was just beautiful! A joy to read and experience, and deceptively simple; this book contains great depths worn lightly, which is a lovely kind of writing to experience while reading a book. I was delighted to discover Rachel Cusk is a prolific author and I will certainly be reading the rest of her work.

There is something really beautiful in this subtle form -- showing a character as the mostly-silent listener and observer. It says something about women. It says something about artists. Unfortunately, I was also pretty bored.
