Masterfully balancing informative and entertaining, The End of Everything (Astrophysical Speaking) covers an incredible depth of cosmology and physics in an impressive accessible manner. Katie Mack goes in-depth enough to contain a good chunk of the most cutting-edge theories on the end of the universe while remaining conversational enough to address a a general audience. From the Big Crunch to the Big Rip, the book covers many distant but terrifying possibilities for our known universe, but ultimately touches back on finding meaning in the meantime. A nearly perfect combination of informative and entertaining, highly recommend!

A largely accessible book about the various ways the universe will end. However, I think it has demonstrated to me how little scientific knowledge and understanding I actually have these days.
I found myself glance reading halfway through - which shouldn't be a mark against the author. She is very funny in parts, but it was just a step too far for my non scientific brain to handle.
If you are a bit more engaged in science or have a brain wired that way I think this would be a great wee book.

The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking) by Katie Mack. This one took me a while to get through, not because it was poorly written or (entirely) above my head, but because the book explores speculative topics on the beginning and end of the universe and I couldn’t stop myself from daydreaming about my own ideas about life, the universe, and everything. It’s a subject a terrestrially-bound critter such as myself probably doesn’t need to think about as much as I do, but we humans just can’t stop ourselves from wondering why we’re here and what this whole existence thing is about. The End of Everything explores the competing theories regarding the end of the universe, from crunching in on itself to tearing itself apart and some confusing alternatives in between. To do this, there’s lots of discussion of the competing theories of how the universe came to be, the struggle in physics to merge general relativity and quantum mechanics, and all of the particles that come together to make us and keep the universe in one piece. The science in the book is approachable enough for a mass-market, popsci book, but the book can get dense and abstract at times in ways that were challenging to wrap my head around. A fun read for daydreamers. Recommended.
(I listened to the audiobook)
Such an excellent book, and at least none of these catastrophes will be our fault.

The stuff of planet Earth constitutes 5% of the universe. The rest is dark energy and dark matter. If physics has left you behind, Katie (despite what the records might say, the fire was not my fault) Mack will catch you up with her readable and enjoyable book, The End of Everything. For example, “The 2D surface is a saddle shape (or, if you don’t have a saddle handy, you can use a Pringles chip),” or “If we need weirdness in physics, we can always rely on the quantum realm to serve us up something good.” Her physics is more fun than you remember.
