DID NOT FINISH: 26%

Found it to be very slow, and I hated how miserable everyone clearly was with no hope of changing that

It took me a while to get into but when I considered quitting I also wasn’t quite ready to put it down. Really enjoyed learning about both the daily rhythms and exceptional situations of WWII; they’re depicted as equally important things and I think that’s what I like so much about this book, its subtlety paired with a million different moods and emotions.

slow-paced

Despite the enthusiastic reviews on the back of the book claiming the book is riveting from the first page to the last, I found it pretty slow going. A good friend gave this to me, or I would likely not have finished it. Having made it to the end, I don't really see why the whalebone theater is all that significant, and the first few hundred pages don't really seem necessary in order to set up what we get during the war time scenes, which seem to me to be the main point of the book. Possibly I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn't recently read two other books which focus on WWII and occupied France. I debated about 2 stars, but decided there were enough engaging bits to warrant the three.

Could have been half the size, first half was so slow and hard work. So many side plots, would prefer a shorter book.
