Beautiful and unexpected. Joanna Quinn is a gifted writer and I can’t wait to read anything she writes next. There are several arcs within this story and I enjoyed them all, along with the very real and likable characters that fill the pages. I loved this one and I’d recommend it to anyone.
A meandering storyline with lyrical prose…just a bit too much of both for me.
What a truly fantastic book. Powerful, moving, beautifully written, so compelling, with such fantastic characterisation. Definitely a favourite of the year.

I read this in fits and starts; it was my gym book so I would only get through small sections a few days a week! Which I have to say, was perhaps a better way to read this, certainly at the beginning.
The first section was a lot slower to get anywhere, and whilst I was enjoying it enough, Cristabel's character rather annoyed me - I think this was largely due to how she seemed so advanced (precocious?) in a way that I always felt she was older than she was, and it just didn't feel realistic at all.
However, as the story progressed, I did get into it more and more, and really enjoyed it once we got to the war. I loved the relationships between the siblings, and there was just so much heart but also the right amount of humour throughout.
It made me smile, and brought me to tears on more than one occasion, and overall I enjoyed it much more than I initially thought I would.

Wauw wauw wauw.
