A coming of age tale about an unorthodox family in England through the war. The layout of this book was slooooooooooow. I thought a lot of the scenes could be edited or even omitted as they didn't always add to the story or characters. The first scene jumped around significantly and then it crawled to a snails pace. I felt the addition of some characters POVs (Rosalind, Jasper) gave good insight into the story line but others had too much internal monologue that didn't grow the character. I still do not see the symbolism or purpose of the whale carcass as a stage and thought it was just odd the amount of time spent on it. This was a mediocre historical fiction/literary fiction novel that was overall, just okay.
