Reading Lex and Ben's story was so sweet. These two boys have been through so much, and choosing to have them hiking the PCT for the plot was such an innovative move from Kelly. I would have loved to get to know these two even better, as there was still so much we just barely skimmed the surface of. There was a lot of plot packed into this book, and I was worried about how it was going to be wrapped up as I neared the end of the book with so much left unsolved/unsaid. The beginning was definitely stronger than the end, but I still really enjoyed this one!

Things I really liked:
-Ben and Alexei
-personal growth arcs that felt earned
-Ben
quitting the trail and it still being considered a major accomplishment

-how religion was brought into alexei’s story

Less so:
- pacing
- I didn’t think that the transition from the letters to the end felt even

Love Anita Kelly and thought this one was so lovely, if you’re emotionally in a place to do a “later in life coming out plus  trauma” story

While this is a well written book and quite moving in parts, I found it the pacing too slow. Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mode for it since it was a lot of angst and internal monologue. The majority of the book is spent in internal dialogue, which makes sense since this book is about two people exploring themselves and who they want to be. It just dragged for me. I really wanted to love this book, maybe I just had too high expectations for it.
