I thought this book was gorgeous and was particularly moved by Alexei's character arc. His journey to come to terms with his parents' rejection and his wrestling with faith after being rejected by the church of his youth moved me to tears.

This was enjoyable, but I was hoping for more (and more accurate) trail content. I guess this is a romance book, not a trail journal, as I kept reminding myself. It was fantastic to do as a buddy read with a friend who has thru-hiked the AT - we both kept commenting on some of the trail things that didn't quite seem right. That took me out of the story fairly often.
And the relationship dynamic didn't seem very healthy - Alexei had basically no regard for how Ben would feel for a lot of his big decisions. But it was all solved by Alexei starting therapy apparently, so yippee! I guess that goes both ways -  Ben also knows that Alexei gets overwhelmed easily, but he plans a *grand romantic gesture* to win Alexei back.

I really liked both Ben and Alexei, the work they put in for their own personal growth and the development of their relationship during the novel, as well as the setting and their shared adventures on the fantastic Pacific Crest Trail. It was a fun, captivating and touching story.
It's at least the third book I have read with so much wilderness in it this year, coincidentally, I quite enjoy that, so I'm setting up a dedicated tag.

People can destroy desire lines, try to train us to use the better developed paths, but we’ll keep making our own desire lines, again and again.

When you feel so connected to the universe, and realize how insignificant you are. And it’s never sad. It’s comforting. Because it’s kind of amazing that we’re here at all. I can be quiet and small and insignificant, but I’m still here. I still get to see all of it. I get to listen. It feels so peaceful, getting to be small.
