This was a really strange book.
When a human mathematician solves a problem and comes too close to a certain truth to an alien people's comfort, the alien nation sends one of their own to inhabit his body and get rid of both the information and anyone who may have been in contact with it.
However, the alien who takes Andrew Martin's body starts to experience humanity and finds he rather quite likes it, despite all of its flaws.
It's a little out there, a little predictable too, but has some funny moments and is an enjoyable read.

matt haig is one of my favorite humans.
i don’t understand how anyone could not love haig’s writing. he speaks to humanity in such a gorgeous, romantic, poetic way without ever overreaching. he takes simple things and make them feel grand.
if you are a human, you should read this book.

4.5 stars. I devoured this book about an alien who comes to Earth and takes over a human form to wipe out some mathematical knowledge which would literally drive the human mind into oblivion. While he’s here on his mission, this extraterrestrial finds himself fascinated by all things human, and in the end has to make some very tough decision. Unlike anything I’ve ever read, I really enjoyed how the book was filled with all sorts of facts. What a story about the tragedy - and joy - of the human condition!
When a bodysnatching assassin has to prevent humans from progressing technologically, there are opportunities for humor and introspection. Some of the humor was sharp and good, but the whole thing goes on for too long and gets quite depressing. I found it difficult to believe how fast the alien came to like people & their culture. Then it got too preachy for me, breaking the show-don't-tell ideal.
What a funny and insightful reflection on human nature and the joys and sadness that fill our daily lives. Didn't even feel like sci-fi although I guess technically it is. Loved this read!
This one was difficult to rate but there was just no way I couldn’t give it five stars. It was just so beautifully written and such an absurd and darkly comedic way to explore what it is to be human, why we irrationally act the way we do and put up with everything. When it comes down to it, it explores individualism and why we choose over and over again to put ourselves through pain. The found family, Gulliver and ‘his’ relationship, ‘him’ and Isobel was just SO GOOD
Also, this was an ode to the greats of peanut butter and Newton better live forever

Shoots for universal truth, lands among platitude salad. I wanted to like this book, I really did. It should be my kind of book. But I just couldn’t stand it at times for how transparently preachy it was and how much the plot was a poorly constructed vessel for the author to give us his 937 meditations on human nature and society.
